This Thursday, at Abbeydale Park, a very young YCSPL under 23s side put up a very creditable performance against an experienced MCC side, that included the Whitley Hall trio of James Moorhouse, Matt Cartwright and Neil Longhurst.

MCC batted first and lost half their side for 77; Wakefield Thornes pair of Joshua Hen-Boisen, who took two wickets, and Jawad Akhtar, who bowled a very impressive spell of 9-4-17-1, to the fore. MCC recovered through wicket-keeper Sam Leech (93 not out off 89 balls) and skipper Moorhouse (47 off 45) to set a challenging 233-7 in their 45 overs.

The under 23s got off to a great start though skipper Alex Grimes (90) and Green Moor's Daniel Airstone (39) who put on 95 for the first wicket. But after James Rhodes (21) had helped Grimes add 57 for the third wicket and both had fallen to Matt Thompson, wickets started to fall regularly and our youngsters ended 218-8 in the 45th over. It was a fine effort against a varied attack, and everyone had an enjoyable afternoon in the Abbeydale sunshine.

Our thanks go to the Sheffield Collegiate club for the use of their facilities, to organiser Andrew Tipple and his partner-in-crime Steve Ward, and umpire Neil Vaughan.
