Last Sunday, in the rearranged Viking Cricket cup first round-tie at the Al-Murad Stadium, Cleethorpes were restricted to 188-8 after electing to bat first. Visiting skipper Bill Kirby top-scored with 93 and Craig Moffatt was the most successful bowler with 3-41. Elsecar then made light work of their target as Callum Higgins hit 46 off 38 balls and Tanzeel Ali an unbeaten 71 off 61. Sam Shaw anchored the innings with an unbeaten half-century, to see his side home with nine wickets and just over six overs to spare. Elsecar’s reward is a trip to Scarborough on 5 June.

In the first round of the Billy Oates Memorial Cup, Luke Bishops’ 65 was the backbone of Adwick-le-Street’s 134-8 at home to Wath 3rds, for whom George Seddon took 3-15 in six overs. In reply, only Aiden Hinchcliffe (40) of the first eight visiting batsmen offered any sustained resistance against Christopher Jeeves (3-22) and Liam Bishop (4-23), and the home side recorded a 22-run win.

After electing to bat first, Rockingham Colliery 3rds were indebted to Ryan Whitehouse (45) and Stephen Bell (63 not out) for their 151-7 against Upper Haugh 3rds, for whom Hayden Cooney and Adam Perry took three wickets each. Upper Haugh replied cautiously, with the top three all reaching the twenties, until skipper Tim Whitehouse (32 off 22 balls) provided the acceleration that got them home with five wickets in hand.

In the third tie, Stocksbridge 2nds bowled Wombwell Main 2nds out for 135 after they had elected to bat – a total that would have been appreciably lower but for Tom Peck’s defiant 61 at No 10. Callum Haywood, who had earlier taken three Wombwell wickets, then powered his side to a five-wicket win with an unbeaten 67.
