Senior Section round-up for 31 July

 

 

Green Moor were left looking over their shoulders at the top of Division 1 as they were well beaten at home to Darfield, who moved up to fourth. The away side posted a massive total when they batted first, with both openers scoring hundreds in contrasting styles. Kastun Stoute was the aggressor as his 108 came in just 69 balls in an innings that included seven sixes, whilst Josh Care made his way to 109 from 115 alls. The opening partnership was worth 179 and set Darfield well on their way to the eventual total of 334-8. Green Moor’s batsmen couldn’t deal with the pressure of the chase, especially as their openers scored slowly in an innings which never gained momentum. Of the seven home wickets to fall, Idris Khan took five of them, finishing with an impressive 5-58.

Wakefield Thornes 2nds moved up to seventh in the table by beating Hallam 2nds, who are still in danger near the bottom of the table. The key to the win was a strong bowling performance, with four bowlers being used by Thornes, three of them taking three wickets each in a solid team display. Hallam’s batters struggled throughout the innings, with only a conservative 30 (74 balls) from Edward Haynes contributing to the score substantially. 100 was never going to be a challenging chase for their visitors, although a duck for opener Joe Cuthbertson will have had them a little nervy for a few overs. Jonathan Scott got them to the win, as he top-scored with an unbeaten 33 (58) to end the game in 33.3 overs.

Rotherham Town’s comfortable win at home to strugglers Aston Hall 2nds kept them in third, but still quite a distance from the top two. The home side put their visitors in to bat and backed the decision up by bowling them out for just 142. Every Aston Hall batsman made at least a single run, but none made it to fifty as Town utilised seven bowlers. Irfan Mirza was the pick of them all as he took 4-35, and there were three-fers for Kazim Hassan and Mohammed Khan, as Aston Hall were dismissed for a below par score. 143 was still a total that needed a good chase from Town, but they made it look easy, losing just two wickets. Rahim Karim and Talha Talha did the job after Waseem Dar and Dhruv Shahi had been removed for single figures and Irfan Mirza had retired. They were both unbeaten on 58 (42) and 39 (56) respectively to end the game in just 24.2 overs.

Treeton 2nds left Sheffield United stranded at the bottom of the division, as they overcame their hosts in a low-scoring encounter. The away side batted first after they won the toss but failed to make a big impression, being bowled out for just 133. Will Cooper was the key man for Treeton as his 45 (51) was the top score, with only a couple of 20s from George Barnes and Paul Fenn backing him up. Mihindukulasuriya Harsha Perera took his wickets total up to 38 for the season with 5-26 for United to leave them happy with their first innings effort. They will have also been pleased as a 58-run opening partnership set them up well in chase of a modest target. What followed was a complete collapse as they fell to 98-9 and then 111 all out. Treeton only required three bowlers in the end, as Matt Lambert took 4-46 and Jon Boden took an excellent 5-42, with Will Cooper taking the only other wicket to end the innings, disappointingly for United, in just 34.5 overs.

Shiregreen made up important ground on Green Moor with a win away at Upper Haugh. The visitors put their hosts in to bat first and bowled well to get them all out for 125. Without William Turner, whose 51 (136) anchored the innings, things could have been much worse for Upper Haugh. Three out of the four Shiregreen bowlers came away with wickets, as Aamar Khan was the main contributor to the hosts’ downfall with 4-30 in 13 overs. The target was a low one for Shiregreen, but no single batsman got on top of the hosts’ attack, and they made it to the target with just four wickets left. Hammad Usman was the top-scorer with just 30 (64) as they crawled over the line in 44.3 overs.

South Kirkby comprehensively won away at Whitley Hall 2nds to move further away from the bottom. The home side batted first after winning the toss and will have been disappointed that the top order couldn’t score more runs after the first four batsmen got starts. Opener Jack Riley was the only one to convert his start, but did so slowly as he scored 60 from 132 balls. After he was removed, South Kirkby and, more specifically, Philip Howell, made light work of the rest of the order and he ended with his best-ever figures of 7-34 in 15 overs. Eight bowlers were used by Whitley Hall in the second innings but to no avail. James Antony Butler was the star man at the top of the order for the visiting side as his 68 (105) set them well on their way to the win, which was achieved just three wickets down. Steve Secker saw his side over the line with an unbeaten 34 as they cruised to victory.

Second-placed team Coal Aston had another great win against Thorncliffe with a win by three wickets. Thorncliffe scored 150 after 50 overs with top scores from James Brown (47) and Bavasuthan Selvanayagam (27), Daniel Hemingway took 3-40. Coal Aston chased down the target in 34.5 overs, with Jack Hall hitting 50 and Chris Park hitting 27 despite good spells from Peter Lomas (3-40) and Jordan Hanson (4-53) for Thorncliffe.

Top-of-the-division Doncaster Town had a comfortable win this week, beating Worsbrough Bridge by nine wickets. Worsbrough were all out for 90 after 39 overs, with captain Alex Littlewood playing a lone hand with 50 and a great spell from Warren Graca (6-21). Doncaster soon chased down the total with captain Graca hitting 48 and sharing a fine opening partnershio with Oliver Cheesewright.

Bottom of the division Elsecar had another disappointing loss this week, this time to Frecheville Community, who won by eight wickets. Elsecar were 99 all out after 39.2 overs, Kieran Higgins top-scoring with 26, Mat Dexter took a brilliant 5-12, supported by Elliot Metcalfe (3-20). Frecheville had no trouble chasing the score in just 23 overs, Dexter leading the way with a fine 48.

Norton Woodseats gained the win over Norton Oakes by 45 runs after Woodseats were 160 all out with one ball to go. Thomas Eyre (47) and captain David Armitage (30) top-scored for the home side, with wickets Daniel Baldwin taking 3-36 for the visitors. Oakes were skittled for 115 all out in the 35th over, with Aamir Ashfaque doing most of the damage with a five-fer. He was well-supported by Daniel Turner with 3-49, whilst Iwan Hutchings top-scored with 27 for the visitors.

Not a good week for third-placed Sheffield Collegiate, who were defeated by Wickersley Old Village in fifth by just 28 runs. Wickersley batted first at Abbeydale and reached a commanding 215 after 50 overs, thanks to a brilliant century from Brady Saunders, whilst Collegiate’s Nick Gaywood was again amongst the wickets with 4-70. The home side fell short at 187 all out after 47.1 overs despite Lewis Bent’s 57. Charlie Harrison and Jack Eggleston took three wickets each for the visitors.

Monk Bretton, who are in fourth place, also lost, by just eight runs to seventh-placed Thorpe Hesley & High Green. The visitors batted first and were all out for 133, with Adam Cooke top-scoring and Jordan Clayton and Craig Heppenstall sharing seven wickets for the home side. It was a relatively straightforward target for Monk Bretton but, with three wickets each for Jack Myers and Hafeez Ali, they were all out for 125 in the 50th over.

Leaders Caribbean comfortably dispatched strugglers Silkstone United by ten wickets to stay top of Division 3. After putting their visitors in to bat, they reduced them to just 116 all out. The top three batsmen made it to double figures, but it was not long before inroads were made, and the rest of the order collapsed. Arslan Tariq was the main man yet again with the ball for Caribbean with 5-25, to take his total wickets for the season to 53. The impressive bowling performance, was followed by equally impressive innings from both of the hosts’ openers as half-centuries apiece for Andre Jackson and Haroon Tariq saw the league leaders home without loss of wicket inside 23 overs. The loss leaves Silkstone United third from the bottom and still in danger.

Penistone produced a strong all-round display to brush aside bottom side Maltby Miners Welfare and keep up the pressure in second place. Scott Jones was the star of the show as Penistone batted first, scoring a season-best 118 (135) at the top of the order, and setting the away side well on their way to a big score. He was backed up by a calculated 52 from 80 balls from Christopher Walmsley as they set Maltby an unlikely 237 to win. Matt Scholey took the plaudits with the ball in the second innings as he took 6-44 to ensure the home side never got anywhere near their target. Tom Groom was the one batsman to put up a fight, as his season’s best of 58 (60) provided a glimmer of light for the home side on an otherwise gloomy day.

Oughtibridge 2nds pulled further away from the bottom of the table with a low-scoring win at home to Barnsley Woolley Miners 3rds. After winning the toss and choosing to field, the away team will have felt they had done a good job as they limited their hosts to 151 all out. Tom Butcher was the spearhead of the attack as he took 5-35, with all four Woolley Miners bowlers contributing to the wickets column. It was a disappointing display for the Oughtibridge batsmen as several players failed to convert starts into meaningful scores. The home side’s bowling more than made up for their batting, however, as their visitors fell well short in the chase. Only three Oughtibridge bowlers were required to skittle their opposition as Aden Biddle took 5-24 and Joel Mann 4-24 to bowling the visitors out for just 62.

Rockingham Colliery 2nds remained second bottom with a heavy defeat away at fifth-placed Wath 2nds. It was the home side who won the toss and put their visitors in to bat, a decision which worked out to perfection as they bowled them out for just 47. Only extras made it into double figures in a dismal innings for the Colliery and all four Wath bowlers picked up wickets. Stephen Johnson took the best figures, with 4-18, in a remarkable bowling effort. The target was never going to be an issue for Wath, but opener Stephen Cook will have been disappointed to lose his wicket as Wath made it to the 48 required in just 14.3 overs.

Second-placed Bradfield Village Fellowship had a great win over Higham by 114 runs. Jonathan Balfour hit a brilliant unbeaten 130 to take the home side to an imposing 280-6 in their overs. Higham were dismissed well short of the target, despite the efforts of Luke Woodhouse and Anthony White. Bradfield remain in second place whilst their visitors lost some ground on the top five.

Hallam gave themselves hope of avoiding relegation with an important win at home to Fishlake, who are one place above them in the table. Captain Tim Elliot’s 59 was the highlight of a disappointing batting performance by the visitors, whilst four of Hallam’s five bowlers took two wickets apiece. William Laycock led the way for the home side in their reply, and Thomas Wills’ unbeaten 27 (38) ensured they got home with five wickets and three overs to spare.

Fourth-placed Cawthorne inflicted a heavy defeat on bottom club Hampole & Skelbrooke. Ryan Bagshaw, Connor Page and Tom Jenkinson were the main contributors to the visitors’ formidable 258-7, whilst James Beresford and Cliff Wilson battled manfully to take three wickets each. The home team had no answer to the bowling of Ryan Bagshaw and Rory Macrow and collapsed to a paltry 41.

Visitors Millhouses scored a daunting 253-8 with Iain Mallett hitting a brilliant 97, well-supported by Tom Roper and Lee Stewart. For the home side, both Michael Blackmore and Saqib Mumtaz put in good bowling stints in the face of some impressive batting. Despite William Finney hitting 46 and captain Jamie Lomas scoring 37, Mexborough struggled and were all out for 152, Sohail Mumtaz taking the honours with 4-40 for the visitors.

Top-of-the-table Parkhead had another brilliant win this week, beating fifth-placed Shiregreen by five wickets. Nazam Mohammed (33) and Liaquat Ali (44) top-scored for the home team, but they were all out for 164 – Tom Wellman taking 4-56 for the visitors. Christian Millward’s half-century was the key innings for Parkhead, and he had good support from Harrison Vinall and Parwan Ali, whilat Aslam Hayat was the pick of the Shiregreen attack.

Conisbrough 2nds posted a huge total in their first innings to win in emphatic style at home to woefully out-of-form Thorpe Hesley & High Green 2nds. James Doran plundered a brilliant 148 from just 78 balls for the home side, an innings that included 21 fours and 7 sixes. He was well backed up by Joe Haigh at number eight, who hit 68 (57) to take their side to 348-8. It was the kind of total that put Thorpe Hesley & High Green’s batsmen under pressure from the first ball, and the pressure took its toll. The top three all got scores, including an unbeaten 76 in 107 from Muhammed Kousar, but no-one could score quickly enough give them a chance. Only six wickets fell in the end, with Tom Humphries taking three of them, but the task was too great for the visitors.

Coal Aston 2nds sealed yet another victory, this time away at Darfield, to see them up to second on average points per game. After being put in to bat, the visitors posted what could be considered a par total, ending on 191-6. Both Peter Millington and Brett Pickford passed 50, making up most of the Coal Aston total, but did so in a measured manner as they ended with 62 (92) and 59 (77) respectively. The result, however, was a highly defendable total and the visitors’ bowlers obliged. Several Darfield batsmen will have been left bitterly disappointed they could not see their side home after getting into the 20s and 30s, but they were restricted by a strong Coal Aston bowling attack in which two bowlers took the plaudits – Richard Timms and Freddie Ross taking four wickets each – and their hosts were bowled out 39 runs short.

Kilnhurst Colliery continued their brilliant run of form as they hit the top of the league for the first time this season with a win at home to bottom side, Bradfield Village Fellowship 2nds. After choosing to bowl first on their home ground, it was a routine victory for the new leaders as they removed their visitors for just 75 runs. Only two Bradfield batsman made it to double figures in a dismal innings as both Matthew Beevers and Josh Cooke came away with four-fers. Kilnhurst will have been disappointed to lose three batsmen in chase of such a low total, but the result was never really in doubt. Todd Brennan seized the initiative and his unbeaten 41 took his high-flying side to victory inside 20 overs.

Handsworth followed up their huge win over Upper Haugh 2nds last weekend with another comfortable victory at Norton Oakes 2nds. Surprisingly, the home side put Handsworth in to bat in the first innings despite their huge total last time out and, unsurprisingly, the visiting batsmen delivered again, although not to the extent of the previous weekend. Sher Khan was the main man this time as he followed his unbeaten 65 in the previous game with 68, but several other visiting batsmen failed to convert good starts into bigger scores. Chasing a target of 235, like the visitors, a few of Oakes batsmen got themselves in, but unlike Khan, none made it past fifty as they eventually fell well short of the target. The bowling performance also showed some resemblance to the one in the first innings as all five Handsworth bowlers contributed to the wickets column.

Rotherham Town 2nds kept themselves in with a chance of promotion as they swept aside Penistone 2nds after winning the toss asking their hosts to bat first. The innings started well enough for Penistone as Michael Brown scored 55 (74), backed up by twenties from Marcus Hoyland and Charlie Tippett, but the scoring was slow and when they tried to accelerate later, they collapsed from 101-4 to 118 all out. Tauseef Arifeen had the best figures for the visitors with 4-37. Town made light work of the chase and the game was ended inside 26 overs with only two wickets lost. Issar Rather will have been very pleased with his day’s work as he scored well over half of the required runs on his way to 81 not out from just 65 balls.

Upper Haugh 2nds dropped to third in the table after their latest loss away at Whiston Forge in fifth. Looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat last time out, they were put in to bat by their hosts and posted an below par 169-9. Four of the Upper Haugh top six made it into the twenties, but all of them failed to convert in a disappointing showing. Scott Biddles was the thorn in their side as he took 5-36, his best figures this season. The pursuit was by no means straight-forward for Forge and went down to the wire. Kristian Lee-Green’s 55 (87) at number three set aside early doubts, but after he was dismissed the home side struggled to build partnerships. Sameer Sarwary scored a brisk and important 27 (18) but was dismissed to leave the home side 13 runs short with a single wicket remaining. It was Biddles who saved the day again as he backed up his bowling display with an vital unbeaten 18 (21) to see his team over the line.

It was a successful week for third-placed Caribbean Sports as they beat lowly Millhouses by seven wickets. After a captain’s innings from Andy Belfield, followed by Gavin Pattman’s 44, the home team reached 152-6; Travis Bacchus taking the honours with 3-43 for the visitors. However Caribbean Sports soon chased down the target, losing only wickets as Arsalan Khalid hit an unbeaten 50, with good support from Arman Ahmed and Jamil Ali (27).

Fifth-placed Green Moor gained a 20-run win in a low-scoring affair at bottom-four side Thorncliffe. The match-winning contribution from the visitors’ middle-order batsman Nigel Dowkes whose 60 rescued them from 17-4 and gave them something to bowl at. Opening bowler Callum Pearce did the damage for the home side with 4-17. The visitors opening bowlers Mark Elsworthn , with two wickets, and Jack Bishop, with three, had Thorncliffe 20-5, but a 42-run stand between skipper Richard Berry and Muraad Gulati threatened to win the game for the home side before David Ward trapped Gulati LBW for 11. Bishop finished also finished with 4-17 as Green Moor ran through the tail to win.

It was another difficult week for bottom club Wentworth who were beaten by Brookhouse, themselves fighting to avoid relegation. After being asked to bat first, only the numbers nine and ten batsmen, Jack Pearson (22) and Nicholas Hague (25) got them anywhere near the three-figure mark as Thomas Green and William Braithwaite took four wickets each. Opener Thomas Snow ensured the win for the visiting side with a responsible innings of 47.

There was a fine win for second-placed Wombwell Main as they beat mid-table Wickersley Old Village comfortably. The home side’s leading bowlers Ben Reeves (3-17) and Richard Wilkinson (3-150 did the main damage as Wickersley were shot out for 75. Jonathan Scaife, with an authoritative unbeaten 44 ensured that there were no alarms for Wombwell as they won in just 12 overs with eight wickets to spare.

Fishlake 2nds narrowly beat third-placed Frecheville in an something of a shock result. Having decided to bat first, Frecheville bowled them out for 113 in 38.5 overs. Samuel Potts was the only Fishlake batsman to do himself justice as he scored what turned out to be a match-winning 53 (73) at the top of the order. Both Adam Gibson and Daniel Kempton took four wickets each to leave the away side much the happier at the halfway point. But their happiness was short-lived however, as they soon fell to 15-3. What should have been an easy chase proved too much, and after a partial recovery to 52-4, they collapsed to 95 all out with five Fishlake bowlers taking wickets.

Scholes won an important game near the bottom of the league to move above their visitors, Doncaster Town 4ths. In a low-scoring affair, Town won the toss and put their hosts in to bat, proceeding to bowl them out for just 110. William Payne and Jak Hotchkiss led the way as they took four wickets each to ensure none of the Scholes batsmen could find their rhythm. The result was a top score of just 23 (56) from Nigel Ward as the home side set a target well below par. It was a target, however, that soon looked a step too far for Town as they fell to 15-3 and then 40-5, from which they never really recovered and were skittled for just 82. Five bowlers were used by Scholes and all five took at least a wicket; David Watson and Azahat Saleem coming away with three apiece.

Silkstone United produced a remarkable batting display to steam-roller bottom side Wath 3rds and give themselves a chance of pulling away from trouble. After electing to bat first on their home ground, they never really looked back, losing only the one wicket of Philip Ruston for 21. A 203-run partnership between Will Mosley and Joe Green then completely took the game away from Wath. Green took on the role of the aggressor in a brilliant unbeaten innings of 122, including 72 in sixes alone, in just 83 balls. He received excellent support from Mosley with 88 not out in 109. Although facing a daunting target, Wath will have still been bitterly disappointed with their reply. Wickets were shared in the United attack, with Sean Pitt taking season-best figures of 4-5.

Warmsworth 2nds produced a brilliant bowling display on their home ground to comfortably overcome lowly Dearne and move into fifth place. After winning the toss, the away side decided to bat first, a decision that backfired quickly as they collapsed to 71 all out. Jonathan Iball took his seasons’ best figures of 5-4, spearheading the Warmsworth attack, with the other three bowlers used all picking up at least one wicket. Not one Dearne batsman made it past 20 with opener Jack Deakin’s 17 the top score. Warmsworth chased the 72 required with relative ease, although three wickets did fall before Matthew Spurr (11*) and Vee Vardhan (7*) saw them home in the 25th over.

Sprotbrough 3rds hammered Whitley Hall 3rds as the first and second clubs swapped places. Whitley Hall on their home ground started the day in first place, but after electing to field first, their visitors posted a highly competitive 204-8. The damage was done at the top of the Sprotbrough order as opener Callum Marsh scored 62, followed by 68 from number three William Rudkin, before Nelson Windle pegged them back with 4-52. It was a tough total to chase, that soon became impossible, as Tim Braithwaite, Tom Hathaway and Daniel Clarke each took three wickets to skittle the home side for 66 and give Sprotbrough an unexpectedly easy win.

Worsbrough Bridge remain in the mid-table fight to avoid relegation despite winning at home to second-bottom Houghton Main 2nds. The visitors elected to bat first but were bowled out for just 113 with eight overs unused. Without Matt Thornton and Mohammad Asghar (28) it would have been a lot worse, whilst John Hubery and Darren Newton did the damage for worsbrough with four wickets each. The chase, however, was not as straightforward and Worsbrough lose six wickets in reaching their target. Robert Stubbings and Phil Smith took the credit for the win with 40s, with the latter’s unbeaten innings seeing his side to victory.

Brodsworth Main 3rd XI struggles continued as they were crushed Adwick-Le-Street 2nds by six wickets in a very low-scoring game. Batting first, Brodsworth were bowled out for a woeful 26, with three wickets each for Christopher Jeeves and Matthew Eades. It was not plain sailing for Adwick in reply, however, as they lost in reaching 30 – despite opener Rhys Fitch scoring 23 in 13 balls.

A low-scoring contest between two bottom-six sides saw Brookhouse 2nds beat Whiston Forge 2nds by seven wickets. Whiston Forge were put into bat and fell to 7-4 early on with Jawad Khan taking 3-12. Thomas Scotland hit an unbeaten 47 but the visitors still only managed 65 all out. An unbeaten 33 from opener Jonathan Kirk saw his side home in some comfort.

Monk Bretton 2nds strengthened their position at the top with a six-wicket win over fifth-placed Upper Haugh 3rds. Lewis Pursglove hit a half century and captain Shaun Cristinacce 30 to help Haugh reach 154-6 after being put into bat – Andy Taylor the top performer with three wickets for the home side. The Bretton batsmen then patiently reached their total with 11 balls left. After Ollie Wainwright had got them away to a decent start, Chris Sayner hit a fine unbeaten 78 to finish the game.

Rockingham Colliery 4ths v Wombwell Main 2nds (at Stainborough) 

 

In a game between two sides in the bottom half of the table, a strong batting performance helped Rockingham Colliery 4ths set up a 69-run victory over Wombwell 2nds. Mark Slatter made a solid 52, and received good support from Lucas Slatter and Robert Wootton as the Colliery side posted 188-9, despite a fine spell from Harry Skelton. Jack Skelton hit a defiant half-century but lacked support as Wombwell fell 69 short in reply.

There were more troubles for second-bottom Sheffield United 3rds as they were brushed aside by second-placed Mexborough 2nds. Batting first, United made a patient 104-7 off their 40 overs with Tom Bradley top scoring with 26. Mexborough got the job done in 28.4 overs with wicketkeeper Bradley Sharp hitting an unbeaten 30.

A second win of the weekend for Caribbean, this time against Thorncliffe, as they won by an overwhelming 162-run margin. In 40 overs the home side racked up a formidable 242-7, opener Arsalan Khalid leading the way with 98, and enjoying fine support from Arslan Tariq and Andrew Jackson (27). Thorncliffe lost three comparatively early wickets and settled for batting out the overs at 80-3, with Charlie Schofield top-scoring with an unbeaten 26.
