Preview of games to be played on 11 & 12 June

 

Leaders Appleby Frodingham take on Treeton at Brumby Hall. Treeton were one of the few sides to have beaten the champions last season, but their fortunes have dipped somewhat this year and they have only one win in their last seven games. Second-placed Tickhill face an Elsecar side who may be third from bottom, but who ran Sheffield Collegiate so very close at the Al Murad Stadium last Saturday. Whitley Hall have quietly moved up into third place with an impressive run of four successive wins, and they will be confident at home to bottom club Whiston Parish Church. Wakefield Thornes won their first five games but have now lost three on the trot – if they are to get their championship bid back on track they need to start winning again soon, but they face a difficult trip to Abbeydale to play a Sheffield Collegiate side that are just four points and one place below them in fifth place. Doncaster Town are one of the form sides in the division, with five wins from six, and, in what looks like a very interesting encounter, they host a Cleethorpes side that is holding its own on its return to the top flight. Finally, Barnsley Woolley Miners, after a poor start, have won their last three, and they face a Cawthorne side, currently in the bottom two, at Shaw Lane. 

 

 

Leaders Hallam and Aston Hall continue to fight it out at the top of the division, but Wickerley Old Village are only ten points behind them, with Houghton Main just two further points in arrears. This weekend, the big match is that at Northfield Road, where Wickersley, currently on the best run in the Premier Section, with five consecutive wins, could leapfrog their visitors in the clash of last season’s two relegated teams. Aston Hall pay their first league visit to bottom side Green Moor; whilst Houghton Main host Conisbrough, who are just two places, but 24 points, below them in sixth place. Shiregreen’s defeat to joint-leaders Hallam last week was their first loss in four games, and they will hope to return to winning ways at home to an inconsistent Barnsley Woolley Miners 2nds side. There is an interesting clash at Moor Road, where two talented sides that were expected to be in the top half of the table, Wath and Sheffield Collegiate 2nds, currently languish in ninth and tenth respectively. Finally, seventh-placed Sprotbrough are at home to Rockingham Colliery, who are currently in the bottom two, but put in a spirited performance against Hoiughton Main last week. 

 

 

Doncaster Town 2nds went clear at the top of Division 1 last weekend with a win against Darfield. This time round, the table-toppers travel to fifth-placed Wakefield Thornes 2nds, one of six sides within ten points of each other behind the two leaders and jostling to get themselves into the promotion race. Darfield host Rotherham Town in joint sixth; whilst Upper Haugh, in joint third, have a trip to Sheffield United, who are level with Rotherham. The other side in joint third, Whitley Hall 2nds, travel to bottom-three side Warmsworth. Eighth-placed Coal Aston host bottom club Oughtibridge; whilst Sheffield Collegiate 3rds, eight points ahead of Oughtibridge, host ninth-placed South Kirkby. 

 

 

Wickersley Old Village 2nds lost their first game of the season in Division 2 against then-bottom side Caribbean last weekend. They will look to bounce back and keep top spot with a tough test away at Hallam 2nds, who are in fifth place. Caribbean, now second bottom, have the chance of another upset when they entertain second-placed Ackworth. There is a top-half clash at Carr Side Lane, where Hatfield Town host fourth-placed Norton Woodseats. Monk Bretton are now bottom of the table, and they play away at Aston Hall 2nds in eighth; whilst Thorpe Hesley & High Green, third from bottom, play host to Norton Oakes, who are joint-sixth. Elsewhere, third-placed Treeton 2nds are at home to bottom-half club Penistone. 

 

 

Elsecar 2nds are one of just two teams in the Senior Section with a 100% record, but they will face a tough test to maintain it this weekend as they host fourth-placed Wath 2nds in Division 3. Such is Elsecar’s dominance that they lead second-placed Tickhill 2nds by 22 points; the latter travelling to lowly Oughtibridge 2nds this weekend. Parkhead, in third place, are just two points behind Tickhill, and they travel to play Frecheville Community, who are sixth. The bottom club, Whiston Parish Church 2nds, are in need of a result at home to seventh-placed Kexborough; whilst their fellow strugglers, Worsbrough Bridge, also have a home fixture, against mid-table Bradfield Village Fellowship. Thorncliffe & Wentworth, just above the bottom three, are at home to Sprotbrough 2nds, who are in fifth place but are only eight points behind Tickhill. 

 

 

The top two in Division 4 both lost against strugglers last weekend and they play each other this time around. League-leaders Millhouses Works are away to second-placed Cawthorne 2nds, with the gap between the two being just four points. Silkstone United and Shiregreen 2nds, who picked up those surprise wins last week, are tenth and eleventh respectively - Silkstone appear to have the easier game this weekend, at home to Maltby Miners Welfare, just one place above them; whilst Shiregreen must travel to play fifth-placed Stocksbridge. Sheffield Collegiate 4ths are in third place, and they will travel to mid-table Rockingham Colliery 2nds; whilst fourth-placed Barnsley Woolley Miners 3rds will host local rivals Higham, who are just ten points below them. Bottom club Whiston Forge have to go to Handsworth Junior Sporting Club, who are in eighth place. 

 

 

There is a tight race for promotion in Division 5 with four points separating the clubs in second, third and fourth. Changes are afoot, however, as second-placed Doncaster Town 3rds travel to third-placed Upper Haugh 2nds tomorrow, in what looks like an intriguing fixture. Fishlake, in fourth, will hope to leapfrog the losers by winning their away game at Norton Oakes 2nds, who remain without a win this season. League leaders Wombwell Main are eight points out in front at present and are at home to bottom-half club Sheffield University Staff. Mexborough Athletic, next-to-bottom, are 28 points adrift of safety and are in desperate need of a win as they travel to Rotherham Town 2nds, who are in a comfortable mid-table position. Elsewhere, four of the six clubs separated by 20 points between fifth and tenth places will play each other; Conisbrough 2nds host Darfield 2nds, and Coal Aston 2nds are at Hallam 3rds. 

 

 

Sheffield United 2nds are 12 points clear at the top of the table and travel to fourth-placed Bradfield Village Fellowship 2nds, in what must be the Division 6 match-of-the-day. Joint second-placed Penistone 2nds play host to ninth club Handsworth 2nds; whilst Thorpe Hesley & High Green 2nds, level on points with Penistone, face a trip to Sprotbrough 3rds, ten points and three places below them in the table. Caribbean Sports 2nds climbed off the bottom of Division 6 last weekend with their first win of the season, and on Sunday they will look to carry on the momentum when they face Wickersley Old Village 3rds, who are level with Sprotbrough in fifth. Barnsley Woolley Miners 4ths now sit bottom of the table, and they have a game away to Whitley Hall 3rds, who are just three places, but 30 points, ahead of them. 

 

 

Brookhouse kept up their winning start to the season in Division 7 last weekend and will provide second-bottom Monk Bretton 2nds with a stern test this time around. Higham 2nds are eight points behind the table-toppers in second, having played a game more, and they host mid-table Eden Grove Parklands. In third place, with a game in hand on Higham and 12 points behind the leaders, Ackworth 2nds have a home game against mid-table Frecheville Community 2nds. Fourth plays fifth when Harley entertain Warmsworth 2nds. At the bottom, Thorncliffe & Wentworth 2nds remain the only team without a win and need to turn things around with an away game against Millhouses 2nds, who are just three places above them. 

 

 

Hatfield Town 2nds currently sit 20 points ahead of the pack at the top of Division 8 but do not play this weekend, having played a game more than the teams below them. This gives second-placed Doncaster Town 4ths and third-placed Stocksbridge 2nds the chance to close the gap to the top, but they play each other in what should be a well-contested game at Finningley. Scholes will play host to Houghton Main 2nds, with the opportunity to close a 14-point gap to their visitors, who occupy sixth place. At the opposite end of the table, basement team Fishlake 2nds will be desperate for a win at home to fourth-placed Worsbrough Bridge 2nds. Wath 3rds are next to bottom, and they visit fifth-placed Rockingham; whilst eighth plays ninth as Silkstone travel to face Dearne. 

 

 

League leaders Whiston Forge 2nds lost their first game of the season last weekend in Division 9. They play host to bottom side Sheffield United 3rds this time around, the visitors still being without a win this season. Second-placed Adwick-le-Street are now just two points behind the league leaders and are away at third-from-bottom Eden Grove Parklands 2nds. Upper Haugh 3rds are only six points behind Adwick, and they travel to mid-table Kexborough, seeking to put more pressure on the top two. Fourth-placed Hampole & Skelbrooke will host Wombwell Main 2nds, just two places below them. Second-bottom Rockingham Colliery 4ths are at Brookhouse 2nds in seventh, a game they will see as winnable in their quest to climb the table. 

 

 

The rearranged second round Viking Cricket Cup game will take place at Shaw Lane, where Barnsley Woolley Miners take on Whiston Parish Church. In the ExtraCover Insurance Whitworth Cup there are three games, most notably at Green Lane, where the Championship Division’s top two, Aston Hall and Hallam, will be in opposition. Holders Sprotbrough are at home to Wath in another interesting tie, whilst Warmsworth visit Championship bottom club Green Moor. 

 

There are also four quarter-finals in the President’s Trophy - Darfield 2nds v Worsbrough Bridge, Frecheville Community v Elsecar 2nds, Stocksbridge v Kexborough and Wath 2nds v Oughtbridge War Memorial 2nds.
