At the last meeting of the League Executive Board, it was announced that Maurice Gilliatt was retiring from his role on the Board as our Safeguarding Officer.

Maurice has been involved in sport all his life, mainly in cricket and football. On leaving school, he started playing football for International Harvesters, for whom he played for some 16 seasons, mainly in the Yorkshire League, apart from two seasons when he played for Scunthorpe United in the Northern Intermediate League. He was good enough to go for trials with Doncaster Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday.

After his football career, he started playing cricket for Barnby Dun CC in the Doncaster League. He soon became a committee member at BDCC, and then the club’s League delegate. He subsequently joined the Doncaster League committee, later becoming League chairman. When the Doncaster and Sheffield leagues merged to form the Alliance, Maurice was initially its' co-chairman with Bill Beckett, before taking over as the chairman of the Alliance. When the Alliance was taken over by the South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League, he joined the SYSCL committee. In 2021 he became a member of the League Executive Board of the newly-formed Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League as its’ Safeguarding Manager.

Maurice was involved in cricket as a player, umpire and administrator for more than 45 years.

We thank him for his huge contribution to cricket in South Yorkshire over all those years, we wish him well for the future, and we hope that he will remain a regular presence at YCSPL games and events.
