The Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League congratulates Simon Widdup on his appointment to the first class umpires’ panel for 2023.

Simon, formerly a prolific opening batsman in the Yorkshire League for both Doncaster Town and Barnsley, winning the league championship with both, as well as playing first class cricket for Yorkshire CCC, has been a leading member of the Yorkshire Premier League Umpires Association since its’ inception in 2016.

Promotion to the first class list is a considerable achievement, but it is richly deserved in Simon’s case as a reward for his knowledge of the game, his consistency and his ability to communicate with players. As an umpire on our panel, in addition to many other prestige games, he has achieved the highest honour we can bestow by being appointed to the Yorkshire Premier Leagues Championship final, between Hanging Heaton and Wakefield Thornes, in 2017. He has also stood in the county 2nd XI competition for several seasons, and in last season’s counties' Royal London one-day cup.

Simon is currently an active and well-respected chairman of the Yorkshire Premier League Umpires Association, a position in which he fully intends to continue to serve.

Simon joins Richard Kettleborough of Sheffield Collegiate as a representative of our league on the first class panel.

We wish him the very best of luck in his new role and for his future umpiring career.
