The Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League is delighted to announce that two new clubs, Sheffield University Staff and Stocksbridge, will join its ranks from the 2022 season.
Both clubs join us from the Yorkshire & Derbyshire Cricket League. Stocksbridge will transfer both its teams to the YCSPL, whilst the Sheffield University Staff first XI will play in the YCSPL in 2022 and the club’s second XI will remain in the Y&DCL.
At present, the first XIs of both clubs compete in the top division of the Y&DCL, and Stocksbridge second XI play in division three of the four-division Y&DCL. In 2019, Stocksbridge first XI finished runners-up at the top of the Y&DCL to Parkhead, who have already joined our League for the 2021 season, and Sheffield University Staff finished in fifth place in the first division.
The Stocksbridge club was formed by the amalgamation of the former Stocksbridge Old and Stocksbridge Works clubs, both of whom were former members of the South Riding League before it became the SYSCL. Stocksbridge play at the Bracken Moor ground, eleven miles to the north-west of Sheffield city centre. The club has a thriving junior section, fielding teams at under-nine, under-11 and under-13 age groups.
Sheffield University Staff play at the University of Sheffield sports complex on Warminster Road, Norton Lees – just three miles due south of the city centre. The University Staff were former champions of the Y&DCL in 2012. The club fully uses its close connections to the student population of the city, attracting not only staff but offering a pathway for students to continue playing the game whilst studying in the city, and thereby ensuring maximum participation in the game.
League chairman Matt Summerhill says, “This is excellent news for our league. Both are very well-run clubs, and will be great assets to the YCSPL.”
