15/16 May - a preview

In the Nicholas Associates Premier division, there are two ‘top against bottom’ clashes, in which Barnsley Woolley Miners, with a 100% record to date, are at home to Elsecar, who are seeking their first win; whilst also unbeaten Wakefield Thornes visit Hallam, similarly seeking to get off the mark. Elsewhere, two clubs that have made a promising start with two wins from three, Appleby Frodingham and Wickersley Old Village, will face each other at Brumby Hall. There will be an interesting game at Town Fields, where 2019 champions Doncaster, who got off the mark a fortnight ago by beating Hallam, will face regular top-four side Treeton, who have lost only at Thornes so far.
In the Championship, high-scoring leaders Whiston Parish Church visit Sprotbrough, who themselves started the season with two big scores, before being skittled cheaply by Wath last time out. Second-placed Houghton Main will fancy their chances at Conisbrough, who are without a win so far; whilst Cleethorpes in third, who would have been disappointed not to get the 88 they needed to beat Barnsley 2nds a fortnight ago, will want to get back to winning ways against newly-promoted Warmsworth. Oughtibridge will hope that the League’s leading wicket-taker, Zeeshan Karamat, will bowl them to victory at home to Barnsley 2nds.
Shiregreen, the only Division 1 side with a 100% record, are at home to third-placed Upper Haugh in the division’s match-of-the-day; whilst Wakefield Thornes 2nds and Hallam 2nds, two of six clubs with two wins from their first three games, meet at Field Lane. The newcomers from Pontefract & District, South Kirby Colliery, will hope to get off the mark at home to Whitley Hall 2nds.
Two sides in Division 2 have 100% records – Monk Bretton and Doncaster Town 2nds. Monk Bretton face third-placed Thorpe Hesley & High Green, who boast the League’s top run scorer, Tiger Dalby, with 264 from his three innings to date. Doncaster visit Worsborough Bridge, who have just one win so far. Wickersley 2nds and Sheffield Collegiate 3rds, who have both made decent starts with two wins from the first three, meet at the Burrows Oval, where the division’s top two run-scorers, the home side’s Adam Bashford and the evergreen Nick Gaywood, could be in opposition. The two sides without a win so far, Norton Oakes and Norton Woodseats, meet at Oakes Park.
Caribbean, Kexborough and Penistone have all made 100% starts in Division 3 – Caribbean appear on paper to have the hardest task with a visit to Silkstone, who have won two from the first three; whilst Kexborough and Penistone have home games against Tickhill 2nds and Maltby respectively – both of whom have just the one win so far.
The top four sides meet each other in Division 4, with leaders Bradfield at home to third-placed Higham, and unbeaten Sheffield Collegiate 4ths facing Barnsley 4ths at Abbeydale. At the other end of the table, two of the three sides looking for their first win, Adwick-le-Street and Hampole & Skelbrooke, have the opportunity to pull clear of Fishlake, who have no game.
It is tight at the top of Division 5, where five sides are on 21 points, just six below leaders Norton Oakes 2nds. Of these, Coal Aston 2nds are the only unbeaten side, with a game in hand on the leaders, but they will face a stern challenge from a Darfield side also on 21 points. Two of the five, Upper Haugh 2nds and Whiston Forge, meet at Wentworth Road, whilst the other, Thorpe Hesley & High Green, are at home to lowly Conisbrough. To retain top spot, Norton Oakes will need to win at Handsworth.
In Division 6, Doncaster Town 3rds and Wombwell are unbeaten at the top of the table. With Doncaster not in action, Richard Wilkinson-inspired Wombwell have the opportunity to pull clear if they can beat Wickersley 3rds at the Aurora Ground. Handsworth 2nds, in fifth place, have a game in hand over the four above them, and they can put themselves in a very challenging position if they can win at Sheffield United, who occupy the place above them. The bottom three are all without a win and two of them, Brookhouse and Wentworth, meet at Rose Lane.
Frecheville 2nds, Sprotbrough 2nds and Whitley Hall 3rds are all unbeaten at the top of Division 7; they all have the opportunity to strengthen their positons as they face sides with just one win so far. Wath 3rds and Warmsworth 2nds are both seeking their first wins at the other end of the table, and must have a decent opportunity against the two sides immediately above them, in Harley and Scholes respectively.
Both Monk Bretton sides have 100% records, with their 2nd XI leading Division 8. They visit Upper Haugh 2nds in fourth place and, with second-placed Rockingham 3rds not in action, Mexborough Athletic 2nds in third may have an opportunity to jump to the top if they can beat Sheffield United 3rds.
Sunday sees the first round of the ExtraCover Insurance Whitworth Cup, with ties at Conisbrough, Houghton Main, Sprotbrough and Wath.
Let us hope that the weather is kind!
