Round-up of League & Cup games played 22 & 23 August

As a result of Saturday’s games, our congratulations go to Wombwell Main, Sheffield Medics and Whiston Forge 2nds on achieving promotion for 2027, Medics will be promoted from Division 7 South as Champions. 

 

 

Sheffield Collegiate are now just one win away from reclaiming the League title they won in 2023. Collegiate put Hallam in to bat at Abbeydale, and bowled them out for 112, skipper Nick Dymock (45) top-scoring for the visitors; Jack Timby (45) and Abdul Faseeh (50*) then took Collegiate to a nine-wicket win. Second-placed Cleethorpes’ game against Tickhill fell victim to Friday’s heavy rain on the east coast. Ikramullah Naseri (51) set Cawthorne on their way to 235-8 after being asked to bat first by Wakefield Thornes at Dark Lane; opener James Rhodes then made 80 when the visitors replied, but they fell 25 short on 210-8 and Cawthorne move back up to third place. Dan Waldron took 5-32 when Whitley Hall bowled Sprotbrough out for 86 after asking them to bat first at Baxter Field; Daniel Wright (5-32) and Parteek Khasa (5-12) then bowled the visitors to a vital win with Whitley all out for 46 in reply. Centuries from skipper Alex Grimes (103 off 122 balls) and Paras Ratnaparkhe (118 off 91) took Appleby Frodingham to a daunting 316-3 after being asked to bat first by Whiston Parish Church at Church Fields; Kieran Lindley then took 5-39 when the home side were all out for 157 in reply. Hamzah Younis (71), with supporting fifties from Mayank Mishra and Abdul Qayoom, helped Wickersley Old Village to post 264-8 after being put in by Doncaster Town at the Beerpig Oval, Curtis Free taking 4-46; Harsha Rajapaksha hit 66 in Town’s reply, but Mishra took 4-45 and they were all out for 187. 

 

 

The top two met at Shaw Lane, where Edward Cole made 54 in Ackworth’s 234 all out, Zarmash Tarakhil taking 4-47 for Barnsley Woolley Miners; Tarakhil followed up with 50 when Barnsley replied, but they were all out for 184. Elsecar are 14 points behind Barnsley in third, after making 201-8 after being put into bat by bottom side Oughtibridge War Memorial at the Al-Murad Stadium, Curtley Louw top-scoring with 63; Zahir Mirza made 50 in the visitors’ reply, but Arsalan Mir (4-56) and Haider Jahangir (5-20) combined to bowl them out for 143. Muhammad Khan (60) and Fazil Reza (67*) led Shiregreen to 255-8 against Aston Hall at Green Lane; the home side were then restricted to 177-9 in reply, and Shiregreen leapfrog them into fourth place in the table. Sheffield Collegiate 2nds earned a valuable win over fellow relegation battlers Doncaster Town 2nds after Louie Owens (53) and skipper Adam Burkinshaw (68) were the main run-scorers in their 195 all out, with Jak Hotchkiss taking 5-44; Owens then took 4-47 when Town were all out for 128 in reply. Jack Hall made 79 in Coal Aston’s 258-7 at home to relegation-threatened Rockingham Colliery, who replied with fifties from Ben Dalton and Jayden Matsikenyeri but finished 33 short on 225-6. Peter Mawdsley made 65 for Tickhill 2nds in their 200-8 at home to Upper Haugh; Joel Martin then took 5-66 and the visitors were all out for 124 in reply. 

 

 

Opener Liam Cottam made 53 in leaders Warmsworth’s 208-9 after being asked to bat first by relegation-threatened Wickersley Old Village 2nds at Common Lane, Connor Snelgrove taking 4-32 for the visitors; Lewis Brown then took 5-36 when the visitors replied, and they were all out for 100. Wath kept on course for the second promotion spot when they beat Parkhead at Moor Road. Rayyan Azhar made 67 and Dishan Sukumar 56 in the visitors’ 189-9, whilst Syed Shah took 6-68; Wath were 40-4 in reply, but Mikey Denton (58) and Hussnain Hussain (69) put on 143 for their fifth wicket to ensure their four-wicket win. Whitley Hall 2nds are still in the race, after 66 for opener James Smith and an unbeaten 101 off 81 balls by prolific Sam Chatterton took them to 286-7 away to bottom side West Bretton, for whom Alex Gough took 4-69; fifties from Greg Walton and Joseph Gott helped the home side to 147-1 in reply, but they then collapsed against the visitors five-man attack, and were all out for 178. Houghton Main picked up a valuable win in their battle to avoid the drop when they bowled Treeton out for 170 at Washfield Lane; an unbeaten 56 from Shadab Khan then steered the visitors to a two-wicket win that has killed off Treeton’s lingering promotion hopes. Jake Taberner took 6-33 when Frickley Colliery bowled visitors Cawthorne 2nds out for 126; then an unbeaten 80 from Stephen Ashworth steered them to an eight -wicket win. Jenson Hayes was in the runs again with 88 in Monk Bretton’s 234 all out at Park Road, with Samuel Grant taking 6-47 for Conisbrough; Craig Heppenstall then took 5-5 off 19 balls when the home side collapsed from 152-4 to 168 all out in reply. 

 

 

Leaders Norton Oakes bowled relegation-threatened Wakefield Thornes 2nds out for 177 at Field Lane; the visitors were then 37-5 in reply, Billy Donnachie taking 5-49, before forties from skipper Josh Cross and George Brooks got the leaders back into the game and, needing four off the final over, the last wicket fell to a run out with the scores level and two balls left. Second-placed Thorpe Hesley & High Green did not have matters all their own way either; after Ashley Reynolds (4-23) and Matt Bradley-Green (5-26) had bowled Sheffield Collegiate 3rds out for 64, they lost six wickets in reaching their modest target. Hatfield Town are the best placed amongst five other clubs still entertaining promotion hopes, and they completed a resounding win at home to Barnsley Woolley Miners 2nds; Joshua Hartfield (95) and skipper David Barrett (52) put on 147 for the fourth wicket in the home side’s 223-4, then Barnsley were all out for 48 against a five-man attack in which Alex Pepper took three wickets for no runs in five overs. Penistone’s hopes took a blow when, after bowling Millhouses Works out for 139 at Millhouses Park, Stanley Stewart took 7-16 for the home side and they were all out for 94 in reply. Norton Woodseats’ hopes also took at blow when they were bowled out for 141 by Aston Hall 2nds at Matthews Lane, Zayn Wasim taking 6-29, then skipper Mark Barnard (61*) took the visitors to a seven-wicket win. Bottom side Hallam 2nds’ hopes are still alive after bowling Elsecar 2nds out for 98 at Crimicar, Jonathan Freeman taking 4-11, and edging their way to a four-wicket win. 

 

 

Leaders Coal Aston 2nds moved to the brink of promotion after beating relegation battlers Rockingham Colliery 2nds at Hoyland Common; Oliver Marsh made 54 in the visitors’ 225-9, Ben Shore taking 4-49 for the Colliery, then Shahzad Hussain took 4-40 when the home side were bowled out for 147 in reply. Darfield again got their noses in front of Frecheville in the second promotion spot, after an unbeaten 76 from opener Josh Barrick and 66 from skipper Jordan Watson helped them to 215 all out at home to lowly Sprotbrough 2nds, for whom Umar Ali took 4-52; Thomas Langley made 53 at the top of the order when the visitors replied, but they were all out for 157. James Kennedy made 52 when Worsbrough Bridge reached 212-9 at home to Frecheville Community, who surrendered second place after Shoaib Yousef had taken 5-36 and they were all out for 98 in reply. Higham’s hopes are all but over after their defeat at Waterside Gardens, where Oughtibridge War Memorial 2nds made 198-6, thanks to 44 each from Will Cooper, Ashley Naseby and Abubakr Rasool; the visitors were then restricted to 173-8 in reply. Andy Judge took 5-24 when Upper Haugh 2nds bowled relegated Wath 2nds out for 110 at Wentworth Road, and Chris Pearson was unbeaten on 67 when the hosts completed a nine-wicket win. Sheffield United did their survival hopes a power of good when a last-wicket stand of 43 lifted them to 190 all out against Shiregreen 2nds, for whom Hamza Tahir took 4-35; Khurran Shahzad then helped them reduce Shiregreen to 48-6 before Mohmammed Afzal (44) and skipper Danish Rasheed (59) gave them hope, but they then fell 16 short on 174 all out. 

 

 

Leaders Whiston Forge were again rescued by a lower-order partnership after they slipped to 135-8 away to Sheffield Caribbean, skipper Matthew Beevers hit an unbeaten 49 off 27 balls to take them to 201-8, with four wickets for Andre Jackson; then Mark Traquair (5-26) and Owen Struggles (5-39) bowled the home side out for 73 in reply. Andrew Hibbert took 4-23 for second-placed Stocksbridge when they bowled Bradfield Village Fellowship out for 132, and they completed a four-wicket win that sees them remain eight points behind the leaders. Six points further back are Kexborough, who kept their hopes alive when Jack Firth (62) and Joseph Bullock (69) led them to 226 all out at home to Barnsley Woolley Miners 3rds, for whom skipper Oliver Heseltine took 5-53; Heseltine then completed a fine all-round game with 56, but Thava Niganthan took 4-22 and the visitors ended 30 short on 198-8. Sheffield University Staff in fourth place kept pace with the leading group when, after Harry Lynch (4-41) helped Pledwick bowl them out for 176 at Warminster Road, bowled their visitors out for 137 in reply, Siddarth Patwardhan taking 4-22. Ackworth 2nds’ hopes were dented when, after they held visitors Doncaster Town 3rds to 169-7, they were bowled out for 145 in reply, with Michael Clarke-Linney taking 5-44. James Brown took 4-32 when Thorncliffe & Wentworth bowled Treeton 2nds out for 126 at Lound Side; but Matt Lambert then took 4-35 when the hosts were bowled out for 97 in reply, despite Jack Pearson coming in at 37-6 and making an unbeaten 44. 

 

 

Wombwell Main confirmed their promotion by beating Maltby Miners Welfare at the I-Source Stadium, Paul Pendle making an unbeaten 54 in the visitors’ 147-8; then skipper Matthew Tonks (65*) and Jonathan Scaife (53*) secured a nine-wicket win for their side. Waverley remain 14 points behind the leaders, and they again defended a modest total when, after being bowled out by Warmsworth 2nds for 106 at Totley, they bowled their visitors out for 36, with Vishnu das Devadas taking 5-17 and Jerin Varghese 4-5. Sheffield Collegiate 4ths bowled relegation battlers Thorpe Hesley & High Green 2nds out for 97 at Abbeydale, but although they completed a five-wicket win, they are now 32 points behind Waverley and their promotion hopes are fading. Silkstone United bowled Hatfield Town 2nds out for 92 and skipper Lee White hit an unbeaten 54 in their seven-wicket win, and the two sides are now locked in joint fourth place. Eisa Hussain made 110 off 87 balls and Bairam Safi an unbeaten 75 for Millhouses Works 2nds in their 291-9 against Penistone 2nds at Queen Street; Marcus Hoyland made 71 when the home side replied, but they were all out for 173. The two relegated sides met at Glass Park, where Barnby Dun were bowled out for 145 by Hallam 3rds, Paul Dykes making 64 and Aashman Arora taking 6-49; George Gooden (42) and Freddie Scott (52) then led the visitors to a five-wicket win. 

 

 

Leaders Sheffield Centralians will be promoted as champions despite losing their unbeaten record to third-placed Green Moor, who bowled them out for 185 at Hill Top, Adeeb Khan making 89; Satvir Singh then made 90 in the home side’s three-wicket win, and they remain in contention for the second promotion place. Parkhead 2nds remain the team in possession though, and skipper Thomas Jackson top-scored in their 203 all out, that enabled them to beat Whiston Parish Church 2nds at Ecclesall Road; Hashim Mahroof took 4-50 when the visitors were all out for 180 in reply, whilst Whiston’s top performers were Shadaab Ahmed (5-31) and Shabaz Qadeer (52). Fishlake won again, and can only hope that the two above them slip up badly in the run-in; they made 183-8 at home to Sheffield Caribbean 2nds and Jacob Meehan took 4-23 when their visitors were bowled out for 116 in reply. Scholes & Harley did their survival chances no harm when they beat relegated Whitley Hall 3rds after restricting them to 167-9; and then skipper Jamie Oliver top-scored with an unbeaten 42 in their four-wicket win. Wadworth are not safe yet, and they were bowled out for 55 and beaten by seven wickets at home by Conisbrough 2nds, keeping the latter’s survival hopes alive; Tom Humphries recording 10-5-8-5 for the victors. Sheffield United 2nds, also needing points to boost their survival hopes, bowled Handsworth out for 187, of which Omar Arshad made 67; Khalil Khan (84) and Aydin Talib (81*) then added 174 for United’s second wicket to set up their eight-wicket win. 

 

 

Leaders Stocksbridge 2nds strengthened their grip on the division’s promotion spot with a straightforward win over Bradfield Village Fellowship 2nds, whom they bowled out for 90, with Archie Jowitt taking 5-24, and they then reached their target for the loss of three wickets. Wombwell Main 2nds can still overtake Stocksbridge, and they did their bit with a comfortable win over Higham 2nds at Royd Lane; they restricted the home side to 190-7 and chased down their target for the loss of four wickets, with opener Andrew Millington unbeaten on 71, having added 115 for the second wicket with Darren Newton (56). Skipper Lee Jeffries (50) led the way in Mexborough Athletic’s 175-8 away to Houghton Main 2nds and Ryan Linney took 7-39 when the home side were bowled out for 133 in reply. Rockingham Colliery 3rds bowled Darfield 2nds out for 114 at School Street, and beat them by five wickets. The game between Doncaster Town 4ths and Adwick-le-Street was cancelled. 

 

 

Sheffield Medics will be promoted as the division’s champions after posting 216-7 at home to second-placed Coal Aston 3rds, with Rakaan Al-Huneidi contributing an unbeaten 56, then restricting their visitors to 143-7 in reply, Bhanu Singh taking 4-44. Wasiqullah Niazai (119 off 104 balls) and Israullah Zakhil (140 off 73) added 232 for Allama Iqbal’s second wicket in their 362-4 at home to Norton Woodseats 2nds, whom they dismissed for 141 in reply, Sheril Philip top-scoring with 61. There was another five-wicket haul for Muneeb Hussain (5-30) when Sheffield Transport bowled The Chronicles England out for 99 at Graves Park, and the visitors duly completed a four-wicket win in the 22nd over. Abdul Rauf took 6-23 when Brookhouse bowled Wickersley Old Village 3rds out for 91 on their way to a nine-wicket win. Pavan Gannerla (89) and Guhan Marimathu (67) were the main contributors to Sheffield Super Kings’ 265-9 and their side bowled Sheffield Centralians 2nds out for 192 in reply, Gannerla (4-27) also shining with the ball. 

 

 

Frickley Colliery 2nds are on the brink of a second successive promotion after comprehensively beating Pledwick 2nds, whom they bowled out for 80, with four wickets each for Corey Hawkesworth and Luke Malone, then Owen Mitchell and Tom Hemingway knocked off the required runs for the loss of no wicket. Second-placed Eden Madras Parklands lost ground after being bowled out for 148 by West Bretton 2nds at Adwick Park, for whom Chris Reece took 4-39, before forties from John Hubery and skipper David Hoyle took the visitors to a three-wicket win. Skipper Tim Whitehouse was unbeaten on 50 in Upper Haugh 3rds’ 176-9 against Sprotbrough 3rds at Hooton Pagnell, Harry Gateley taking 5-29 for the visitors; but George Tingle then took 5-27 in his side’s 22-run win. Keith Ring (61) led the way for Hallam 4ths in their 191-8 against Worsbrough Bridge 2nds, who were all out for 79 in reply. Barnsley Woolley Miners 4ths conceded to Monk Bretton 2nds. 

 

 

Promoted leaders Waverley 2nds extended their lead at the top of the table to 58 points after a convincing win over Elsecar 3rds at the Al-Murad Stadium on Sunday; Oliver Mottram took 6-62 when the visitors were bowled out for 172, but Elsecar were all out for 80 in reply. De la Salle are now level with Sheffield Spartans in second in a race for the second promotion place, with four clubs in with a chance. Sam Wainwright made 60 for De la Salle in their 189-9 against Sheffield Transport, and Chris Siddall took 5-18 when Transport were all out for 64 in reply. Thorncliffe & Wentworth 2nds did their chances no harm at all when Shaik Azeez (86) helped them to 187 all out against Hallam 5ths, for whom Jack Lambert took 4-39; then Oliver Hill took 5-18 when Hallam were all out for 147 in reply, last man Gunveer Channi (32) lifting them from 102-9. Lucas Siddall made 59 in Sheffield Collegiate 5ths’ 154 all out away to Norton Oakes 2nds, who recorded a seven-wicket win in 26 overs. 

 

 

Leaders Sheffield University Staff 2nds game at Dearne was cancelled, but second-placed Kexborough 2nds strengthened their grip on a promotion place after Jak Stafford (64) helped them to 210 all out at home to Eden Madras Parklands 2nds, for whom Sathishchander Gunasekar (49) and Lokesh Ramakrishna (51*) were in the runs in reply, but they fell 30 short on 180 all out. Challengers Fishlake 2nds made 200 all out against Mexborough Athletic 2nds at the Beecroft Estates Ground, then David Moores took 4-15 when the home side were all out for 89 in reply. Higham 3rds were bowled out for 52 by Silkstone United 2nds at Thurgoland, which would have been a lot worse without the efforts of skipper Steven Beresford (43), Euan Graham taking 5-24; the visitors then completed an eight-wicket win in the eighth over. Sprotbrough 4ths conceded against Wath 3rds. 

 

 

Leaders Whiston Forge 2nds gained 12 points when Hallam 6ths conceded to them. An unbeaten 99 from Ashley Fiddler was the backbone of second-placed Tickhill 3rds’ 206-5 against Richmond at Worksop, and they bowled their visitors out for 78 in reply. Frecheville Community 2nds retained their hold on the third promotion place after posting 198-8 at home to Sheffield University Staff 3rds, with Harry Morris making 46, and they bowled the Staff out for 188 in reply, David Jakhar making an unbeaten 101 off 91 balls in a losing cause. Coal Aston 4ths are still in the promotion hunt; Connor Baxter (4-21) helped them restrict Oughtibridge War Memorial 3rds to 110-7 and Ryan Wileman was unbeaten on 48 in their six-wicket win. Scholes & Harley 2nds’ four-man attack bowled De la Salle 2nds out for 57 and they then beat them by ten wickets. 

 

 

 

Three wickets each for Jack Danks, Jason Mills and Jake Taberner helped Frickley Colliery to bowl Whitley Hall 2nds out for 103 after they were put in to bat, Jack Myers top-scoring with 44 for Whitley. However, Frickley also found batting hard work, and were struggling on 68-7 when player-of-the-match Taberner weighed in with a crucial 25 to help his side to a two-wicket win.
