Round-up of league and cup games played on 6 & 7 June

The weather hit the Saturday league programme, particularly affecting the south of the region, but in games that did start, a result was achieved in all cases. 

 

 

Leaders Sheffield Collegiate’s game at Hallam was abandoned without a ball bowled, as was Appleby Frodingham against Whiston Parish Church. The teams in second and third places, Tickhill and Cleethorpes therefore had the chance to close the gap on the leaders when they met in the game of the day at the Brookfield Oval, and it turned out to be a real nail-biter. Skipper Ian Mansfield (45) led the visitors to 137 all out after they were put in to bat; then Tickhill looked in the driving seat at 79-3 in reply, but Harry Clewett took 4-33 and the hosts were also all out for 137, after Adam Copley and Alex Rowland had threatened to win it with a last wicket stand of 25. An unbeaten 55 off 33 balls from Muhammad Ashraf helped Whitley Hall to a healthy 244-6 after they had been put in to bat by Sprotbrough at Melton Road, where Tim Braithwaite took 4-70; then the hosts fell 45 short on 199-7 in reply. James Rhodes (90) and Waqar Hussain (56) helped Wakefield Thornes to 192-4 after they were put in to bat in a 30-over game at home to Cawthorne, whose valiant effort left them just nine short on 183-9. Curtis Free took 5-24 when Doncaster Town put Wickersley Old Village in to bat and bowled them out for 150 at the Spinks ground; opener Jaden Fell’s unbeaten 83 then took the hosts to a three-wicket win. 

 

 

The top two met at Ackworth, where the hosts were put in to bat by Barnsley Woolley Miners. Skipper Luke Townsend (83) and Joshua Hen-Boisen (84) put on 126 for Ackworth’s second wicket, and Shingi Masakadza weighed in with 53 off 28 balls in their 285 all out, Rizwan Ishfaq taking 5-69. Ali Zaryab and Zarmash Tarakhil (53) then added 99 for Barnsley’s second wicket, but they slumped from 105-1 to 129-7 with Townsend taking 5-54, before the lower order took them to 221-8 in reply. Third-placed Elsecar closed the gap to Barnsley to two points. They asked Oughtibridge War Memorial to bat first at Waterside Gardens, and the hosts were 157-7 when rain brought their innings to a close, Arsalan Mir taking 4-36; then, needing 136 off 20 overs to win, Elsecar reached their DLS target with eight wickets and eleven balls to spare, Curtley Louw 86 not out off 51 balls. Coal Aston moved up to joint-fourth after asking Rockingham Colliery to bat first at Hoyland Common and restricting them to 227-6 in 44 overs, Lasith Lakshan making an unbeaten 112 off 114 balls; then, facing a revised target of 195 off 36 overs, forties from Jack Hall and Daniel Hemingway took the visitors to a three-wicket DLS win with five balls to spare. There was a thriller at Wentworth Road, where Upper Haugh were bowled out for 195 by Tickhill 2nds, skipper Tommy Hyde making 67 and Joel Martin taking 6-73; then James Waller (65) and Peter Mawdsley (62) got the visitors off to a fine start with an opening stand of 121, but four wickets each for Habil Arshad and Parvez Asghar brought Upper Haugh right back into the game, and Tickhill, who needed eleven runs with three wickets left, were all out for 194 in reply. The games between Sheffield Collegiate 2nds and Doncaster Town 2nds; and Shiregreen and Aston Hall were abandoned without a ball bowled. 

 

 

Leaders Warmsworth were pushed all the way by bottom side Wickersley Old Village 2nds before claiming a two-run win at the Beerpig Oval. Adam Whitford took 6-38 when the visitors were bowled out for 146; then Wickersley fell agonisingly short on 144-9 in reply. Treeton missed the chance to overtake second-placed Wath when they lost at Middlecliff Lane. Home skipper Ian Simon (54) set Houghton Main on their way to 140 all out, veteran Steve Foster rolling back the years with 9-41 for Treeton; but the latter’s efforts were in vain when his side were bowled out for 96 in reply, with match-winner Simon then taking 6-30. Conisbrough also missed out on the opportunity to strengthen their position in the top four. They made 191-9 in 48 overs against Monk Bretton at the Castle ground; then the hosts, chasing 159 in 32 overs to win, reached their target with five wickets and three balls to spare, with Chris Schofield unbeaten on 65. Frickley Colliery skipper Matt Pinder took 4-39 to help his side bowl Cawthorne 2nds out for 132 all out at Dark Lane, but the visitors were then dismissed for 109 in reply, Harry Airstone taking 5-43. George Naylor made 50 in West Bretton’s 125 all out against Whitley Hall 2nds at Baxter Field, whilst Sam Chatterton took 4-31; then Max Temple made an unbeaten 67 in the hosts’ nine-wicket win. The game between Parkhead and Wath was abandoned without a ball bowled. 

 

 

Sheffield Collegiate 3rds’ lead at the top was cut when their game at home to Thorpe Hesley & High Green was abandoned without a ball bowled. Norton Woodseats are now just two points behind Collegiate after their win over Aston Hall 2nds at Green Lane; after bowling their hosts out for 175, they were led to a six-wicket win by Ronald Richards-Caines (54). Four points behind Woodseats are Barnsley Woolley Miners 2nds, who bowled Hatfield Town out for 95 at Shaw Lane, Ishaq Shenwari taking 4-24; opener Andrew Clayton then held the hosts’ innings together with an unbeaten 37 as they reached their target for the loss of six wickets in the 21st over. Skipper Sam Yellops made 52 in Hallam 2nds’ 148 all out against Elsecar 2nds at the Al-Murad Stadium; opener Kieran Higgins (54 not out) then led his side to a six-wicket win. The games between Norton Oakes and Wakefield Thornes 2nds; and Penistone and Millhouses Works were also abandoned without a ball bowled. 

 

 

Coal Aston 2nds retained their 14-point lead at the top when they beat Rockingham Colliery 2nds at Stonelow. The hosts were 58-6 before Tom Trower (50 not out) and Brett Pickford lifted them to 144-7; Shaun Trower then took 5-22 when the Colliery were all out for 89 in reply. Second-placed Frecheville Community had a battle with Worsbrough Bridge at the Hobson Bowl. After being 70-6, forties from Joel Wake and David Ratcliffe took the hosts to 161 all out, Liam Hague taking 5-58 for Bridge; but the visitors put up a fight in reply, and ended nine short on 152-8. Rocco Cook (65) top scored for Sprotbrough 2nds when they made 213-9 away to Darfield, for whom Nathan Kitchen took 4-59; then Brooklyn Whitmill (73 not out off 42 balls) won the game for the hosts for the loss of six wickets with almost ten overs to spare. Badiul Jamil took 8-23 for Shiregreen 2nds when they bowled Sheffield United out for 89 at Bawtry Road, on their way to beating them by six wickets. George Deegan’s 50 was crucial for Higham when they made 167-5 at home to Oughtibridge War Memorial 2nds; opener Joseph Boyden made 65 when the visitors replied, but from 97-1 they lost eight wickets for 62 runs and ended on 165-9. Upper Haugh 2nds moved into the top half of the table with a comfortable win over bottom side Wath 2nds at Moor Road. Skipper Gurvinder Singh made 63 in the visitors 217 all out, whilst Kawish Tariq took 5-31; then Ayden Dawson took 4-31 when Wath were all out for 131 in reply. 

 

 

Thorncliffe & Wentworth are now four points clear at the top after bowling Treeton 2nds out for 123 and beating them by five wickets at Washfield Lane. Whiston Forge moved back up into second place when they bowled Sheffield Caribbean out for 122 at Guilthwaite Hill, Dale Stanley taking 4-17; then Harrison Struggles made 48 in their seven-wicket win. Sheffield University Staff drop to third after losing out in a low-scoring game at Pledwick. The hosts were all out for 126, but James Eastlake then took 4-30 to help them bowl the Staff out for 115 in reply. Bavasuthan Selvanayagam was in the runs again when he made 69 in Kexborough’s 193 all out against Barnsley Woolley Miners 3rds at Bence Lane, despite Dairen Hirst-Spalding’s 7-43; then Matty Bowering took 5-18 when the visitors were all out for 106 in reply. Keelan Booth (59) and Dave Harris (104 off 110 balls) put on 145 for the first wicket for Ackworth 2nds when they piled up 257-3 against Doncaster Town 3rds at Blaxton; Harry Leach (78 not out) and Michael Clarke-Linney (63) put on 91 for the hosts’ fourth wicket, but once Clarke-Linney had departed, wickets started to tumble against Finlay Martin (5-42) and Town ended on 207-9. Bradfield Village Fellowship against Stocksbridge was abandoned without a ball bowled. 

 

 

Wombwell Main’s game against Maltby Miners Welfare fell victim to the weather, and on Sunday, Sheffield Collegiate 4ths took advantage and drew level with them after beating Waverley at Abbeydale. Nidheesh Alukkal was 91 not out when the visitors were bowled out for 204; then opener Jack Kettleborough (63) and the experienced Charlie Wall (80) set Collegiate on their way to their five-wicket win with a second-wicket stand of 111. On Saturday, Sajid Hussain’s 76 helped Waverley to 171 all out against Warmsworth 2nds at Common Lane, despite Jay Horne’s 5-33; then Jerin Varghese took 5-21 when the hosts were all out for 117 in reply. Silkstone United missed a chance to climb into the top four after losing to Hatfield Town 2nds at Carr Side Lane. The hosts were 87-7 before an unbeaten 46 from Alex Brown took them to 159-8; then United were held to 146-9 in reply. Matt Scholey took 7-17 to help Penistone 2nds bowl Millhouses Works 2nds out for 110 at Millhouses Park; but in their reply the visitors struggled against Brad Simpson (4-22), and it took an unbroken last-wicket stand of 26 between skipper Marcus Hoyland and Scholey to see them home by one wicket. The game between Hallam 3rds and Barnby Dun was abandoned without a ball bowled. 

 

 

Sheffield Centralians now lead the table by 26 points after a resounding win over Green Moor at Olive Grove. Muhammed Khan made 119 off 86 balls in the hosts’ 240-7, and Green Moor were all out for 55 in reply. In the only other game played in the division, Wadworth bowled Conisbrough 2nds out for 121 at Park Lane, Liam Stainthorpe top-scoring with 63 and James Proudley taking 4-22; then the visitors survived a poor start before skipper Gareth Hobson’s unbeaten 39 took them to a five-wicket win. The games between Handsworth and Sheffield United 2nds; Sheffield Caribbean 2nds and Fishlake; Whiston Parish Church 2nds and Parkhead 2nds; and Whitley Hall 3rds and Scholes & Harley were all victims of the weather. 

 

 

Higham 2nds drew level at the top by narrowly beating Wombwell Main 2nds at the I-Source Stadium. Steven Vickers took 5-28 when the hosts were restricted to 166-9; but Billy Smith (6-27) took the first six wickets and Higham were 76-7 in reply, before Riley Brook’s undefeated 57 at number nine gave them a one-wicket win. There was a similarly narrow win for Mexborough Athletic over Houghton Main 2nds at the Beecroft Estates ground, where the visitors were bowled out for 115, opener Gul Safi making 46; then Athletic made heavy weather of the chase before completing a one-wicket win. In the battle of the bottom two at Adwick Park, home skipper Matthew Eades (48) helped Adwick-le-Street reach 122 all out, whilst Finlay Briggs took 4-9 for visitors Doncaster Town 4ths; then Matthew Cumpsty took 4-26 when Town were all out for 73 in reply. The games between leaders Stocksbridge 2nds and Bradfield Village Fellowship 2nds; and Rockingham Colliery 3rds and Darfield 2nds were lost to the weather. 

 

 

Sheffield Medics have pulled eight points clear at the top after beating Coal Aston 3rds, who were third overnight, at Stonelow. In a 32-over game, the visitors made 179-8 before restricting Coal Aston to 106-8 in reply. Muneeb Hassan took 5-25 to help Sheffield Transport bowl The Chronicles England out for 127 at Meadowhead; but Jedds George then took 4-11 when Transport were all out for 77 in reply. Brookhouse against Wickersley Old Village 3rds; and Norton Woodseats 2nds against Allama Iqbal were abandoned without a ball bowled. 

 

 

Luke Malone took 4-14, but Paul Hanks’ unbeaten 47 for Pledwick 2nds took them to 115 all out away to leaders Frickley Colliery 2nds; the hosts then had to work harder than usual for their win, which they achieved by three wickets, and they are now ten points clear at the top. In second place are Eden Madras Parklands, who beat third-placed West Bretton 2nds at Park Lane after the hosts had posted 222-5, with fifties from Curtis Gates and Lee Matthews; then Balakumar Varatharajan (100 not out off 98 balls) guided his side to a seven-wicket win. Upper Haugh 2nds are now fourth after bowling Sprotbrough 3rds out for 55, with Sean Hawkins taking 4-16; then knocking off the required runs for the loss of three wickets in the 12th over. At the Warm Roofs ground, Worsbrough Bridge 2nds were held to 116-8 in a 30-over game by Hallam 4ths, opener Alan Littlewood playing a lone hand with 71; but after reaching 68-1 in their reply, the visitors then lost five wickets for 39 runs, before completing a four wicket win in the 27th over. 

 

 

Charlie Schofield was 56 not out in Thorncliffe & Wentworth 2nds’ 192-6 at home to Hallam 5ths, who were all out for 88 in reply, Stuart Phillips taking 4-16. There was no play in any of the other games. 

 

 

Fishlake 2nds reduced the gap to the leaders to 12 points by beating Mexborough Athletic 2nds at Pinfold Lane. They bowled their visitors out for 83 and, despite losing six wickets in their reply, knocked off the required runs in the 16th over. Dale Shillito took 4-34 for Kexborough 2nds when they restricted Eden Madras Parklands 2nds to 107-9 at Parklands; then an unbeaten 79 from opener Scott Shillito saw the visitors to a seven-wicket win. Robert Hill’s unbeaten 66, in which he added 101 in an unbroken eighth wicket stand with skipper Craig Royston, helped Silkstone United 2nds recover from 46-7 to 147-7 at home to Higham 3rds; Steven Bamforth recorded 10-5-11-4 for the visitors, who were then bowled out for 95 in reply, with Finlay Hodgkinson taking 5-17. James Rowett’s 88 was the highlight of Sprotbrough 4ths’ 160-4 against Wath 3rds at Barnby Dun; then Charlie Whitehead made 64 in vain in the Wath reply, as his side were all out for 147. Leaders Sheffield University Staff 2nds against Dearne was abandoned without a ball bowled. 

 

 

Coal Aston 4ths increased their lead at the top when they beat Oughtibridge War Memorial 3rds at Wentworth. Having restricted their hosts to 150-9, they were led to a seven-wicket win by John Harrison (70 not out). De la Salle 2nds made 128-9 against Scholes & Harley 2nds at Scholes; then bowled their hosts out for 95. Sheffield University Staff 3rds against Frecheville Community 2nds; and Hallam 6ths against Whiston Forge 2nds both fell victim to the weather.
