It was a similar story at Millhouses Park, where Millhouses Works 2nds bowled Wadworth out for 123, Andy Belfield taking 5-21, and were then in turn bowled out for 121; but they are still promoted. Two out of five will join Darfield 2nds in relegation to Division 7 next season. After losing to Handsworth Junior SC, Wickersley Old Village 3rds are currently two points adrift of Caribbean, and are two places and eight points clear of the third relegation spot. Richard Berry took 4-40 when Handsworth were reduced to 130-9, but Mohammed Hussain (90 off 39 balls) put on 96 for the last wicket to take them to 226 all out. Put in to bat by Colliery at Bawtry Road, United reached 222-9, thanks mainly to a third wicket stand of 112 between Baharullah Momand (78) and Shaheen Momand (58), whilst Manvir Kang took 4-29 for the visitors. Tawqeer Hussain then took 6-13, and the visitors were bowled out for 39 in reply. It was much closer for Parkhead at Adwick Park, where the hosts reached 124-9; then Hashim Mahroof (41) took Parkhead to 91-5 in reply before three wickets fell cheaply and only a patient unbeaten 29 from Ian Davis saw the visitors home by two wickets with ten balls to spare. At the other end of the table, Bradfield Village Fellowship 2nds secured an invaluable win over fellow strugglers Higham 2nds, and climbed above them to eighth in the table with a game in hand. James Lawson carried his bat for an unbeaten 54 in Higham’s 151-9; then Bradfield made a decent start in reply, but after the openers had gone, four quick wickets from George Vickers caused some flutters, and it was left to skipper Craig Shepherd and Ewan Fearnley to see them home by three wickets. Next-to-bottom Handsworth Junior SC 2nds missed out on the opportunity to climb out of the bottom three when their game against Brookhouse was cancelled, and Upper Haugh 3rds slipped into the relegation places when they lost at home to Stocksbridge 2nds. Norton Oakes 2nds occupy the third promotion spot after beating Thorncliffe & Wentworth 2nds at Oakes Park. Callum Ratcliffe was unbeaten in 57 in the visitors’ 206-6, but 89 from George Brooks helped Oakes to a three-wicket win. Norton Woodseats 2nds are ten points behind their neighbours, but with a game in hand, after a comprehensive win over Sprotbrough 3rds at Matthews Lane; responding to the hosts 174-8, Sprotbrough were all out for 32, with David Thorpe taking 5-14. Elsewhere, an unbeaten 54 from Tahseen Ahmad lifted Hallam 4ths from 67-9 to 114 all out against Monk Bretton 2nds, for whom Andy Taylor took 5-27; then Thomas Glover’s unbeaten 43 steered Bretton to a five-wicket win.
Frickley Colliery 2nds have been crowned champions of Division 9 after Scholes & Harley 2nds conceded against them on Saturday, and similarly, Elsecar 3rds’ promotion was confirmed when Wath 3rds conceded their game. With Waverley also already promoted, there is one promotion place up for grabs, and Worsbrough Bridge 2nds are currently two points ahead of their only challengers, Sheffield University Staff 2nds. This despite Bridge’s loss to Waverley 2nds at Park Road, when opener Alan George made 101 out of the visitors’ 236 all out, and then Shreenivasan Ravi took 4-15 when Bridge were all out for 159 in reply, despite 73 from opener James Bottomley. Charlie Burke was 59 not out when Mexborough Athletic 2nds chased down Oughtibridge War Memorial 3rds’ 119 all out for the loss of just one wicket at Wentworth. 47 each from Joe Radovanovic and Simon Waites helped Fishlake 2nds to 199-6 away to Silkstone United 2nds, before opener Kevin Taylor (85 not out) steered his side to a two-wicket win.
Whitworth Cup final
We congratulate Treeton CC on winning Sunday’s Whitworth Cup final against Sheffield Collegiate 2nds at Aston Hall CC.
Collegiate totalled 212-8 after electing to bat first. Opener Samuel Meadows made 43 for Collegiate, but although most of the other batsmen got a start, none went on to play a match-winning innings; and there were three wickets each for Harry Glaves and Ben Birtles. In reply, skipper Matt Lambert (32) and Gareth Davis (47) got Treeton off to a good start with an opening stand of 52, and then player-of-the-match Harvey Wootton made 55 off 47 balls to take his side within sight of victory, which was duly achieved by five wickets with almost four overs to spare. Tate Miller (3-31) was the pick of the Collegiate attack.
It was Treeton’s sixth Whitworth Cup success, and it was a fifth Whitworth winners medal for seasoned campaigner Gareth Davis.
Our thanks go to all at Aston Hall CC who did a magnificent job of hosting the day.
