On a day that was spoiled by the weather, there were still a number of issues resolved on Saturday, and we congratulate Cawthorne 2nds and Hatfield Town on confirming their promotions from their respective divisions, and Wakefield Thornes on winning the K3 Dental Cup.
Cleethorpes strengthened their position at the top of the Premier Division, when they gained a DLS victory over neighbours Appleby Frodingham at Brumby Hall. An unbeaten 51 from David Mansfield took the leaders to 216-7; then Mayank Mishra took three crucial wickets to peg back the hosts' response, and they were 13 short of their par score when rain ended play. Both Cleethorpes’ nearest rivals were thwarted by the weather. Forties from skipper Matt Taylor and Greg Wadsworth took Wakefield Thornes to 164 all out against Hallam at Crimicar; then the hosts were 56-5 in the 19th over when play was ended. An unbeaten 76 from Ben Carrigan helped Sheffield Collegiate recover from 86-4 to post 256-5 against Wickersley Old Village at Northfield Lane, and the hosts had made 56-3 off 15 overs when the rain came. Jordan Bethel’s 42 helped Whitley Hall to 179 all out away to Cawthorne, for whom Mustafa Shinwari took 4-43; then Muhammad Ashraf took 4-25 when the hosts were bowled out for 103 in reply. As a result, Whitley join Thornes and Collegiate on 174 points, 16 behind the leaders. There was an important win for Shiregreen at the other end of the table. They were the only side in the division to choose to bat first, and they reached 247 all out against Doncaster Town at Town Fields. Set a revised 229 off 42 overs to win, Town were 138-6 when the weather called a halt to proceedings. Barnsley Woolley Miners were bowled out for 140 by Tickhill at Shaw Lane, skipper Boeta Beukes top-scoring with 50, then stand-in skipper Mike Jepps and Jim Morgan (48) put on 96 for the first wicket to set up the visitors’ 62-run win against a par score of 41 when rain intervened in the 21st over. Barnsley are now 18 points adrift of Hallam, Shiregreen and Wickersley at the bottom of the table.
Championship Division leaders Sprotbrough bowled Tickhill 2nds out for 152 at the Brookfield Oval, skipper Dean Williamson taking 5-25 and Daniel Wright 4-42; the visitors were then 79-4 in reply when the game was halted by rain, but won by seven runs on the DLS method. Ackworth leapfrogged Whiston Parish Church into second place, ten points behind the leaders, when they beat them by 52 runs on the DLS method at Ackworth. Joe Norbury made 62 out of the visitors’ 139 all out, before Dale Longfield and Sam Swinden put on 93 for the hosts’ first wicket, and Ackworth were 107-1 when the rain came. Doncaster Town 2nds game away to Rockingham Colliery was abandoned with the visitors on 139-7, following a serious injury to Rockingham fielder Lewis Upton in an on-field collision. Sonny Owens took 6-25 to help Sheffield Collegiate 2nds bowl Elsecar out for 166 at Abbeydale; opener Dylan McDonald hit 84 off 57 balls to put Collegiate ahead of the scoring rate, and they were 99-4 off 20 overs and earned a DLS win by eight runs. In the battle of the bottom two clubs, Lachlan Jacobs made 74 in Wath’s 168-9 away to Treeton, for whom Mark Cummins took 4-51; Steve Foster was unbeaten on 48 when play was ended for the day with the hosts on 120-5 off 28 overs, and Wath won by six runs on DLS. Oughtibridge War Memorial made 210 all out against Aston Hall at Waterside Gardens, with Michael Brown and skipper Will Cooper each making 51, but only 6.5 overs were possible in the visitors reply, and the game was abandoned.
In Division 1, leaders Upper Haugh saw their game abandoned when Whitley Hall 2nds were 71-1 in the 18th over in response to their 207-9 at Baxter Field. Earlier Samuel Thompson was unbeaten on 53 for the visitors, and Sam Chatterton took 4-54. Second-placed Coal Aston made 276-7 against Houghton Main at Stonelow, with Dave Rodgers (104) and Jon Trower (48) putting on 86 for the third wicket. The visitors were 99-6 in reply when play was truncated, and the hosts won by 91 runs on the DLS method. The visitors were 74-6 when the contest was ended, and Darfield won by 52 runs on DLS. Chris Walmsley was unbeaten on 51 in Penistone’s 138-9 against Wickersley Old Village 2nds, who were still looking a win that will guarantee their safety, but their reply was cut short at 85-1 when the rain came and the game was abandoned. Forties from Liam Marshall and Andrew Haywood helped Warmsworth to 171-8 against Monk Bretton, for whom Joshua Van Oudtshoorn took 4-44; then Bretton slipped to 98-8 in reply, and lost by 71 runs on DLS.
Buck Rees-McClure took 4-20 to help Cawthorne 2nds bowl Elsecar 2nds out for 91 in Division 2; then Kade Fletcher and the League’s top run-scorer, Brennan Wilson (46 not out), took them to a nine-wicket win that guarantees their promotion to Division 1. Parkhead move up into the promotion places with a seven-run DLS win over Norton Woodseats at Matthews Lane. Hatfield Town confirmed their promotion from Division 3 when they restricted Rockingham Colliery 2nds to 114-9, Aiden Coulbeck taking 6-36; then Alex Pepper (63 not out) led them to 103-1 in 28 overs before the rain came, and they were declared winners on the count-back rule. The weather ruined Norton Oakes’ hopes of keeping pace with the leaders, after restricting third-placed Sheffield Collegiate 3rds to 178-7, Callum East taking 4-32 and Ben Fielding making 62 for Collegiate, Oakes’ reply lasted only one over before being halted by rain. Shiregreen 2nds were unable to close the six-point gap to the promotion places when, after Afad Sohail helped them to 209-9 against Frecheville Community, the weather prevented the second innings even from starting. Wath 2nds bowled Treeton 2nds out for 70 at Moor Road and then completed a five-wicket win in the 15th over. Sam Hudson (4-38) and Laurence Pickford (5-43) helped them bowl the hosts out for 98; then, although they did not have matters all their own way against Jake Harris (4-15), they claimed a three-wicket win in the 22nd over. K3 Dental Cup final
Congratulations to Wakefield Thornes CC, who won the K3 Dental Cup for the second time, beating Doncaster Town at Castleford CC by 100 runs.
Opener James Rhodes made 42 after Thornes elected to bat first, but after he departed, they were 86-4 before player-of-the-match Jawad Akhtar (73) helped them reach 195-8. Warren Graca was the pick of the Town attack with 4-32. Doncaster’s reply never really got going, and with three wickets each for Charlie Bourne and Sam Wisniewski, they were all out for 95.
Our thanks go to all at Castleford CC, who did such an excellent job of staging the final.
