Wakefield Thornes were indebted to Joe Billings for their narrow win over Tickhill at Field Lane, that keeps then 14 points clear in the Premier Division. Ross Diver (63) led from the front when visitors posted 225-6, Brad Green taking 4-34. Billings then dominated Thornes’ reply with an unbeaten 117, and steered the hosts to a one-wicket win with five balls to go, after they had been 152-2. Cawthorne kept up their challenge in second place, after Liam Wiles had taken 4-53 to restrict visitors Wickersley Old Village to 187-8, Hamzah Younis top-scoring with 63. Aryan Versani made 86 in the hosts’ reply, and Wiles completed a very successful day with an unbeaten 56 in their four-wicket win. Sheffield Collegiate responded after last week’s reverse, but only after recovering from 70-8 to post 180-9, thanks to Rubaiyat Abrar (48) and Henry Eldred (45 not out), who put on 99 for their ninth wicket away to Shiregreen. Five bowlers then shared the wickets when the hosts were then bowled out for 136 in reply. Mayank Mishra took 6-33 to help bowl Whitley Hall out for 155 at Baxter Field, then Tom Keast (80 not out) and Jordan Cook (65 not out) put on an unbroken third wicket stand of 138 to see Cleethorpes to victory in the 40th over. Alex Grimes (141) and Kieran Lindley (101 off 85 balls) put on 153 for Appleby Frodingham’s third wicket at home to Hallam, whilst there were four wickets each for Alex and William Coates, as the hosts were bowled out for 291. Andre Bradford (63) led the visitors’ reply, but four bowlers shared the spoils as Hallam were all out for 246 in reply. Jaden Fell (109) and Bhargav Merai (71) put on 152 for Doncaster Town’s second wicket in their 284-5 at home to Barnsley Woolley Miners. George Cowan (4-38) and Harsha Rajapaksha (4-21) then combined to bowl the visitors out for 79 in reply.
Doncaster Town 2nds had a routine six-wicket win away to bottom club Wath, to put them eight points clear at the top of the Championship Division. Wickets were shared around when the hosts were bowled out for 97, and Town then cantered to victory in the 26th over. The game of the day was at Melton Road, where third-placed Whiston Parish Church recorded a hard-earned win that saw them leapfrog their opponents, Sprotbrough, into second place. Bilal Afzal (73) was the main man for the visitors in their 162 all out, whilst Parteek Khasa and Tim Braithwaite took four wickets each for Sprotbrough. Joe Norbury then took 4-48 when the hosts were bowled out for 151 in reply. Sheffield Collegiate 2nds had a convincing with over Ackworth at Abbeydale, that saw them leapfrog their visitors into fourth place. Shafiullah Shinwari made 52 in Collegiate’s 181 all out, then the visitors were bowled out for 82 in reply, with Tate Miller taking 5-15. Zayn Wasim took 4-48 to help Aston Hall bowl Elsecar out for 199 at the Al-Murad Stadium, then an unbeaten 85 from opener Zaki Anjam steered the visitors to a five-wicket win with two overs to spare. Lewis Upton (59) helped Rockingham Colliery to 189-6 against Tickhill 2nds at the Brookfield Oval. James Eaton then made 51 at the top of the order for the hosts, but there was a mid-innings collapse and the teams were tied when the innings closed on 189-9, Paul Cummins taking 4-54. Sam Patel took 5-32 to help Oughtibridge War Memorial bowl Treeton out for 132 at Waterside Gardens, then the home side claimed a seven-wicket win in 30 overs.
The game between Division 1 leaders Upper Haugh and Barnsley Woolley Miners 2nds at Shaw Lane had to be abandoned in the sixth over of the second innings, following a very serious leg injury to the home side’s Ethan Shillito, that necessitated the attendance of the air ambulance on the ground. We wish Ethan all the very best and hope that he will make a full recovery. Earlier Parvez Asghar took 5-38 when the hosts were bowled out for 126, and the visitors were well on top when the game was abandoned. Josh Whittaker (50) and Buddhika Bopitiyage (59) helped Conisbrough to 229 all out at home to Coal Aston, for whom Oscar Oborn-Corby took 4-59. An unbeaten 123 from Jack Hall, who put on 118 for the second wicket with brother Ben, then took the visitors to an eight-wicket win in the 40th over, and they returned to second place in the table. Darfield missed the chance to narrow the gap to the leaders when Syed Sadat (5-34) bagged his second successive five-wicket haul to help Warmsworth bowl them out for 122 at School Lane. Skipper Nathan Swift then hit 54 at the top of the order, and his side completed a five-wicket win in the 32nd over. Monk Bretton ended Houghton Main’s recent good run, after Chris Schofield (81) helped them to 244-9 at Middlecliffe Lane, Ian Simon taking 4-58 for the hosts, who were then all out for 159 in reply. An unbeaten 96 from opener James Ahmed anchored Whitley Hall 2nds’ 259-4, with fifties from Matthew Thompson and Sam Woodcock, against Penistone at Queen Street. Connor Smythe (53) and Lee Ogden (46) put on 94 for the third wicket in the hosts’ reply, but they were all out for 214, with Joe Chatterton taking 4-63.
There was another dominant performance from Division 2 leaders Frickley Colliery, when they posted 265-7 at home to Oughtibridge War Memorial 2nds, opener Adam Rollin leading the way with 97. When the visitors replied, Matt Pinder took 4-38 and Jack Danks 4-42, and they were all out for 123. Cawthorne 2nds are now in second place, 24 points behind the leaders, following a straightforward win over Parkhead at Ecclesall Road. Thom Macrow took 5-25 when the hosts were all out for 136, then Nick Lowe (55 not out) and Ryan Bagshaw (48 not out) put on an unbroken 100 for the second wicket in the visitors’ nine-wicket win. Hallam 2nds were bowled out for 138 by Thorpe Hesley & High Green at Crimicar, then Rasheed Eddy made 50 in the visitors’ two wicket win, which was achieved despite the efforts of Harry Spence (5-45). Norton Woodseats are still in the promotion hunt after an unbeaten 72 from David Armitage helped them to 237-6 against Millhouses Works at Matthews Lane. Tom Roper made 61 in Works’ reply, but Andrew Scott took 4-31 as they were bowled out for 180. Skipper Jamie Howarth (80) and Jonathan Scott (50) were the main run-scorers for Wakefield Thornes 2nds in their 228 all out against Aston Hall 2nds, for whom Daniel Bothma took 4-34. Stan Ashton then made 104 in Aston’s reply, adding 136 for the second wicket with Lewis Sansome (44 not out), and they completed an eight-wicket win in the 47th over. Opener Kieran Higgins’ unbeaten 83 was the backbone of Elsecar 2nds’ 236-8 away to bottom side Sheffield United, who made 201-9 in reply.
Zarmash Tarakhil made 63 in Worsbrough Bridge’s 225-9 against Division 3 leaders Norton Oakes at Oakes Park. Ted Hutchings (57) and Daniel Baldwin (87) then put on 127 for the first wicket to set up a seven-wicket win for the hosts. Former leaders Hatfield Town lost for the second successive week after Shiregreen 2nds’ skipper Muhammad Naseem had helped his side to 184-8 at Carr Side Lane; then Mohammad Tariq took 4-26 when the hosts were bowled out for 163 in reply. Sheffield Collegiate 3rds in third place narrowed the gap to Hatfield to ten points after a convincing win at home to Higham. Collegiate were all out for 186, opener Luke Profitt making 57 and Gareth Kilburn taking 5-28; but then Nadeem Khan took 4-41 and the visitors were bowled out for 111 in reply. Lochlan Gannon (56) and Isaac Wainwright (94 not out) put on 115 for fifth-placed Wath 2nds’ second wicket away to Sheffield Caribbean, who were all out for 119 in reply. Alan Lockwood took 4-30 for Rockingham Colliery 2nds when they restricted Bradfield Village Fellowship to 136-9 at Hoyland Common, and they then completed a six-wicket win with three overs to spare. Liam Curtis took 6-57 for Treeton 2nds in Frecheville Community’s 193-9 at the Hobson Bowl; but his efforts were to no avail when his side was all out for 96 in reply, Neil Ramsden taking 5-28.
Division 4 leaders Sprotbrough 2nds retained their 100% record when Nick Graves took 4-24 to help them beat Doncaster Town 3rds by four wickets at Blaxton. The hosts were all out for 125, then Rocco Cook made 51 for Sprotbrough, who won with six overs to spare, despite Alfie Pierson’s 4-23. Forties from Liam Margison and Ben Bentley helped second-placed Barnsley Woolley Miners 3rds to 197 all out against Wombwell Main at Woolley, then Zain Ali took 4-22 when the visitors were all out for 147 in reply. Upper Haugh 2nds and Sheffield University Staff are just six points behind Barnsley with a game in hand. The former were 142-8 against Sheffield Collegiate 4ths at Wentworth Road, when Dan Whitehouse (67 not out) and Craig Jackson (60 not out) came together in an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 111 to take them to 253-8. Aarav Singh made 64 when Collegiate replied, but Jawad Asgher took 6-50 and they were all out for 204. The University Staff were 73-8 at home to Kexborough, third overnight, and for whom Thava Nig took 4-23, but the lower order got them up to 152. Staff skipper Heston Christian then proved the matchwinner with 5-27, to add to his crucial 35 earlier, and the visitors were all out for 108 in reply. There were four wickets each for Sam Hudson and Eliot Tye when Coal Aston 2nds bowled Stocksbridge out for 155 at Stonelow, but Josh Stevens (5-33) and Jake Vickers (4-28) then combined to bowl the hosts out for 132 in reply. An unbeaten 135 from skipper Connor Brunt, who shared century partnerships with Darren Schofield and Luke Heath, took Thorncliffe & Wentworth to 236-3, and they bowled Barnby Dun out for 154 in reply, Jack Pearson taking 4-24.
Ackworth 2nds maintained their lead at the top of Division 5 by beating Conisbrough 2nds at home. Ackworth were all out for 153, and when the visitors replied, Alex Clemo took 5-27 and they were all out for 114. Carl Walton took 5-13 for second-placed Hatfield Town 2nds, when they bowled Fishlake out for 116 at Pinfold Lane on their way to a four-wicket win. Eight points behind Hatfield are Whiston Forge, who bowled Maltby Miners Welfare out for 59 at Guilthwaite Hill, Adam Purshouse taking 6-23 and Matthew Beevers 4-36; before they chased down their target for the loss of one wicket in the 16th over. Joe Yellott (65) and George Jenkinson (61) led Whiston Parish Church 2nds to 255 all out against Hallam 3rds at Church Fields, Ben White taking 4-67; Owen Struggles then took 4-37 when the visitors were bowled out for 166 in reply. On Sunday, Matt Scholey took 5-23 when Penistone 2nds bowled Warmsworth 2nds out for 114 at Common Lane; then skipper Sam Lee was unbeaten on 43 when they completed a nine-wicket win.
Unbeaten Waverley’s lead at the top of Division 6 is now 32 points after they comprehensively beat third-placed Millhouses Works 2nds. Vishnu Das Devadas returned 5.5-1-9-4 when the hosts were bowled out for 145, then Nidheesh Alukkal was unbeaten on 77 when Waverley passed their target without loss of wicket. Hamza Hussain took 4-22 for Handsworth Junior SC when they bowled second-placed Thorpe Hesley & High Green 2nds out for 120 at Smithywood Road and completed a seven-wicket win. Green Moor are just six points outside the promotion places after Curtis Coles’ unbeaten 74 helped them overhaul Scholes & Harley’s 175 all out for the loss of four wickets. Skipper Richard Berry took 5-39 to help Wickersley Old Village 3rds bowl out bottom side Darfield 2nds for 148, Nathan Kitchen making 51, then Steven Dransfield (51) and Brooklyn Whitmill (69 not out off 39 balls) took Wickersley to a seven-wicket win in the 23rd over. James Needham made 108 off 90 balls for Wadworth in their 195-9 away to Mexborough Athletic, for whom Lee Jeffries took 4-37 and then made an unbeaten 55 at the top of the order in their three-wicket win. Charlie Wragg made 60 in Whitley Hall 3rds’ 164-9 against Sheffield Caribbean 2nds at Green Moor; Makie Mulaffar then hitting an unbeaten 87 off 67 balls in Caribbean’s nine-wicket win.
The wickets were shared out when Division 7 leaders Sheffield United 2nds bowled Handsworth Junior SC 2nds out for 80 at Oliver’s Mount before completing a nine-wicket win in the 16th over. Parkhead 2nds kept pace at the top when they bowled Stocksbridge 2nds out for 110, and they then completed a five-wicket win despite John Musgrove’s 4-24. Carl Newbold (4-14) and Carl Walton (5-3-8-4) helped Adwick-le-Street bowl Doncaster Town 4ths out for 54, and they duly completed an eight-wicket win to remain in contention in third place. Upper Haugh 3rds lost ground on the leaders when they made 145-7 against Rockingham Colliery 3rds, who then completed a two-wicket win despite David Plummer’s 4-23. Michael Dixon made 53 in Higham 2nds’ 169-7 against Brookhouse, for whom Jasneet Gulati took 4-25; then opener Thomas Snow was unbeaten on 62 when Brookhouse claimed a three-wicket win. William Crowcroft (83) and Chris Stott (85 not out) helped Barnsley Woolley Miners 4ths post 235-3 against Bradfield Village Fellowship 2nds, who were all out for 134 in reply, Hayden Parker-Wake taking 4-34.
Division 8 leaders Houghton Main 2nds were bowled out for 162 away to Wombwell Main 2nds, Gulaga Singh making 53, then skipper Rob Owen (52 not out) rescued the hosts from 63-5 and led them to a three-wicket win. Norton Woodseats 2nds seized the opportunity to narrow the gap at the top, Rahimullah Khil’s 84 helping them post 230 all out against bottom side Barnby Dun 2nds, whom they bowled out for 135 in reply. Johnny Davidson (50) helped Norton Oakes 2nds post 201-6 away to Dearne, then Benjamin Gaskell took 5-20 when the hosts were bowled out for 124 in reply. Hallam 4ths were bowled out for 139 by Thorncliffe & Wentworth 2nds at Sandygate, but Tom Banham then took 5-23 to give the hosts a 34-run win. Tony Singh took 5-36 for Eden Grove Parklands to help them bowl Monk Bretton 2nds out for 125 at the Castle Ground, and the visitors then claimed an eight-wicket win in 30 overs. Kexborough 2nds were bowled out for 86 by Sprotbrough 2nds at Bence Lane; but Thomas Green then took 4-13 and the visitors struggled to a two-wicket win.
The battle of the top two in Division 9 resulted in a narrow win for Waverley 2nds over Frickley Colliery 2nds at Totley. Tom Collis (5-20) and Mark Nurse (4-38) bowled the hosts out for 126, then Midhun Mohan took 4-11 when Frickley were all out for 115 in reply, thereby losing their 100% record for the season. Daniel Currie made 54 and Leon Kemp took 4-39 when third-placed Worsbrough Bridge 2nds bowled Oughtibridge War Memorial 3rds out for 130, then Adnan Asher made 51 in Bridge’s five-wicket win. Skipper Ciaran Hanvey made an unbeaten 69 to help fourth-placed Sheffield University Staff 2nds from 98-5 to 194-5 away to Frecheville Community 2nds, for whom Kevan Cowley made 54 in their 179-9 in reply, Ben Kidner taking 4-31. Skipper Matthew Whitaker made 61 for Mexborough Athletic 2nds in their 182-8 against Elsecar 3rds, for whom Thomas Reavill made 55 in reply, but his side finished 29 short on 153-8. Chris Bound made 121 off 87 balls in Silkstone United 2nds’ 253-7 at home to Whiston Forge 2nds, who were all out for 182 in reply, Mark Daly and Cameron McLean putting on 75 for the last wicket. Opener Charlie Whitehead made an unbeaten 101, adding 134 for the second wicket with Joe Wainwright (55), in Wath 3rds’ 222-9 against Fishlake 2nds at Wentworth, and Ollie Burrows took 4-9 when the visitors were all out for 61 in reply. Eden Grove Parklands 2nds made 186-8 against Scholes & Harley 2nds at Parklands, then Jamie Bunn recorded 8-4-7-7 when the visitors were all out for 43 in reply.

On Sunday, the League T20 Finals Day was held at Field Lane, the home of Wakefield Thornes CC. In the Plate final, Whiston Parish Church were put in to bat by Sprotbrough and bowled out for 136, George Thompson taking 3-17 in his four overs, whilst Arman Jaffer top-scored with 49. Thomas Pepper (45 off 29 balls) gave Sprotbrough a brisk start in reply, then man-of-the-match Lewis Hogg, with an unbeaten 57 in 44, saw them home by eight wickets with three overs to spare.
In the Blast final, Uzair Mumtaz hit 61 off 38 balls after Wakefield Thornes elected to bat first, but Curtis Free, with 4-33, took wickets at vital times to prevent them from really capitalising on their 60-0 in the first six overs, and they made 190-6 in their 20 overs. Jayden Fell (45 off 26 balls) got Doncaster Town off to a brisk start and Bhargav Merai anchored the innings with an unbeaten 49 off 33, but the match-winner was Charlie Kaye with an explosive 51 off 21 balls that enabled Town to pass their target for the loss of five wickets with 14 balls to spare.
We congratulate Sprotbrough and Doncaster Town on their successes; they have now qualified for the national ECB Vitality T20 Plate and Blast competitions respectively, and we wish them the very best of luck for those. We would also like to thank Wakefield Thornes CC for doing such a great job of staging the day’s cricket.
Also on Sunday, skipper Alex Pepper made 60 in Hatfield Town’s 211-8 against Doncaster Town 3rds in the President’s Cup, and Joshua Yemm took 3-27 when Town were bowled out for 112 in reply. Skipper Connor Brunt top-scored with 48 in Thorncliffe & Wentworth’s 175-7 against Sheffield Collegiate 3rds, for whom Michael Goodchild took 4-45 and then made 70 when Collegiate chased down their target for the loss of four wickets in the 34th over.
