Whilst out of 75 scheduled league games on Saturday, only one achieved a result, there were still a number of issues resolved. Our congratulations go to our new League champions, Sheffield Collegiate, who have reclaimed the title they won in 2023. As a result of points accrued and lost on Saturday, Coal Aston 2nds have won Division 3; Sheffield Centralians are the champions of Division 6; Stocksbridge 2nds have won Division 7 North; Waverley 2nds are the champions of Division 8 South, and Sheffield University Staff 2nds have won Division 9 North. In addition, promotions are now confirmed for Wath back to the Championship; Waverley to Division 4; Frickley Colliery 2nds to Division 7; and Kexborough 2nds and Whiston Forge 2nds to Division 8. Our congratulations go to them all.
The one game that did achieve a result was in Division 8 North at Frickley, where Frickley Colliery 2nds put Hallam 4ths in to bat and restricted them to 134-9, Mark Nurse taking 5-47. An unbeaten 50 off 27 balls from Lewis Binns then unsured that Frickley beat both their opponents (by seven wickets) and the weather, thus obtaining the points they needed to ensure their promotion.
There were still some fine performances in the games that not beat the weather. In the Championship at Ackworth, Dale Longfield and Luke Townsend had put on an unbroken first-wicket stand of 75 in 12 overs when their game against Aston Hall was abandoned.
Ciaran McCarthy recorded 5.4-3-6-5 for Hatfield Town when they bowled Millhouses Works out for 48 at Carr Side Lane in Division 2. Hatfield had reached 21-1 off 14 balls in reply when the rain forced an abandonment, and the last wicket partnership of 18 between Brad Simpson (25) and Joseph Thake for Millhouses was crucial in denying the home side victory. In the same division, James Eyre (37) and skipper Dan Loughlin (51*) had just put on 100 for Norton Woodseats to take them to 112-2 after being put in to bat away at Penistone, before that game was abandoned.
In Division 4, opener Jack Pearson made 55 for Thorncliffe & Wentworth in their 102-3 after being put in to bat away to Kexborough before play ended for the day. Also in that Division, Finlay Martin made an unbeaten 59 at the top of the order for Ackworth 2nds, who were 109-3 when their game at Pledwick was abandoned.
In Division 6, Syed Ali took 5-19 for Sheffield United 2nds to help them reduce Parkhead 2nds to 115-9 before the abandonment at Queen Street.
In Division 8 North, opener John Hubery was unbeaten on 79 off 45 balls in West Bretton 2nds’ 127-3 off just 14 overs at home to Monk Bretton 2nds, when the game was abandoned. In that division also, Adrianna Darlow took 4-41 when Barnsley Woolley Miners 4ths restricted Sprotbrough 3rds to 199-7 in their 40 overs, but the Barnsley reply was then curtailed to six overs.
In Division 9 North, Keith Bee took 4-11 in ten overs when Fishlake 2nds bowled Eden Madras Parklands 2nds out for 93 at Pinfold Lane, and the hosts were 40-1 when rain foiled their victory bid.
On Sunday, both the K3 Dental Cup final and the President’s Trophy final, and the ECB Vitality T20 Plate Northern finals at Elsecar, in which Ackworth were due to play Woodhouse Grange 2nds, were all cancelled.
One game did take place on Sunday, in Division 8 South at Lound Side, where Malik Azam (96*) led Sheffield Spartans to 218-9 in a 30-over game against Thorncliffe & Wentworth 2nds, for whom Oliver Hill took 4-35; the hosts were 181-6 in reply, with forties from Dale Weldon and skipper Jacob Grubb.
Bank Holiday Monday saw three games played; in Division 8 North, Upper Haugh 3rds' skipper Sean Hawkins made 35 in an opening stand of 57 against Worsbrough Bridge 2nds, and although his side were bowled out for 103, Callum Plummer then took 4-2, to add to his second highest score in the first innings of 30, and Bridge were all out for 32 in reply, after losing their last seven wickets for two runs.
In Division 8 South, champions Waverley 2nds were bowled out for 127 by Thorncliffe & Wentworth 2nds, with four wickets each for Henry Sykes and Shaik Azeez, whilst Amrithesh Uppumtharamel made the game’s top score with 38; the hosts were then bowled out for 52 in reply, six bowlers sharing the wickets. Relegated Sheffield Collegiate 5ths were bowled out for 116 by Elsecar 3rds, who were 87-9 in reply, Warfan Zulfiqar taking 4-20, until last man William Reavill hit an unbeaten 21 to see his side to a one-wicket win that leaves his side just four points outside the promotion places.
On Sunday 6 September, the K3 Dental Cup final, between Cawthorne and York, will now be played, at Wakefield Thornes CC with a 12noon start; and the ECB Vitality T20 Plate Northern finals will take place at Elsecar, starting with the game between Ackworth and Woodhouse Grange 2nds at 10.00am. The President’s Trophy final will now be held on Sunday 13 September at Whiston Forge CC.
