Wakefield Thornes support the Ceylon Cricket Foundation

Wakefield Thornes have committed to supporting the Ceylon Cricket Foundation for the next two years.
Cricket is the most popular support in Sri Lanka, but the country is not prosperous, living standards are low, and the schools do not have the funding to buy equipment for all the many talented youngsters that want to play. To ensure that these potential young players are not lost to the game, the Foundation has been established to provide support. It is run by Tharindu Perera, who is an ex-Thornes player, has been the Yorkshire Diamonds’ coach, and is now a High Performance Coach at Warwickshire CCC.
Over the next two years, Thornes will be raising funds to pay for cricket equipment for Sugathananda College, which is situated in a small town called Talpe, 15km from the city of Galle. The aim is to provide for the College the following:
• Kit - A junior and senior bag for each school; each bag containing four bats, four pairs of batting pads, six pairs of batting gloves (L/H & R/H mix), four thigh pads, four helmets, four sets of stumps (two wooden, two plastic), cricket balls (12 match, 20 training), and 15 abdominal guards
• A coach and their wages (15,000-25,000 rupees/£60-100 per month)
• An initial training course for one coach - Foundation and Level 1 (13,000 rupees/£50)
• Coaching equipment (24,300 rupees/£95)
• Coconut matting for playing surface (48,500 rupees /£185)
• Concrete net facility (480,000 rupees /£1,900)
Thornes will be raising money by curry nights, barbeques, a charity t20 tournament, a percentage of the sponsorship money raised by the club, and a small levy on each item of kit they sell.
If any YCSPL club would like to be involved by donating to the Thornes project, please contact Chris Froggett. Chris will ensure that any support is recognised through project updates and in information supplied to the school in Sri Lanka.
If any club would like to be involved directly, and sponsor a school themselves, they should contact Tharindu on info@ceyloncf.co.uk.
